Siming and the Hair Accessory

Siming and the Hair Accessory

Apr 07, 2018

They finally left the airport, three of them stood by the exit waiting for their pick up. Yu Ji did not care about the men's presence and stretched her arms out wide, feeling much more comfortable after doing so. She still had on her cap and mask, but took off her sunglasses. She had yet to have a proper introduction with him, she was curious the kind of personality he would have.

When the car arrived, Yu Ji headed for the back seat without much thinking. Meng Yi exchanged looks with his boss, who then just went for the front seat without saying a word.

After reaching the hotel, checking in and now standing outside each of their own rooms, Mengyi's boss immediately entered his room, leaving the siblings to exchange words.

"We have to head out for business meetings. Just spend the rest of the days however you like."

---

The shopping malls were definitely the kind of place to avoid, thus she went to the river, taking pictures of the river together with the buildings. She ate street foods, observed people from a bench near the river. The sun was warm that day, the wind was strong enough to blow her hair, fluttering in the air. She delved into the tourist areas of the city, finding different kinds of souvenirs splattered all over endless rows of stalls. She saw one small stall that seemed dark and old, but she found it intriguing and decided to stop by. She munched on her savoury chives pancake, attentively looking at the souvenirs through her shades. She had her fingers going through all of them one by one, till they instinctively stopped at one particular interesting piece of souvenir. It was an old-looking hair accessory.

"Girl, do you want to buy this?" The old lady sitting behind the counter let out a faint smile. Her hooded eyes looked melancholic with wrinkles forming at the corners.

"Ah...this hair decoration looks interesting." She wiped away the dust on some parts of the accessory, revealing the silver beneath. It looked simple yet captivating to her, strangely enough because she was never someone who liked simplicity.

"That hair decoration has a story to it."

"Oh? What is it?" The old woman's eyes looked distant when she began recalling the story of it.

"A husband once...gave this to his wife, but sadly she passed away. This was his last gift to her."

"Wow...that's a very nice story. How much is this?"

"Fifty yuan." Yu Ji reached into her bag for some cash, but the old woman took the hairpiece, wrapped it in a piece of brown paper and handed it to her.

"You're the first person to take an interest in this. I'll give it to you."

"No, wait. Granny, I-"

"Just take it," the old woman said, while shoving the hair accessory into Yu Ji's bag. Yu Ji awkwardly looked at the gift she just received in her bag and bowed her head deeply at the old woman and smiled, mouthing a soft thank you before leaving.

After she left, a young-looking woman emerged from within the stall, standing beside the old woman, looking at Yu Ji's back view.

"Master Siming, are you sure this is the right thing to do?" that young woman asked. The old woman just stared at Yu Ji walking away until she finally replied,

"Of course."

"You're a deity, you don't have to do this."

"I'm a deity, that's why I have to do this." Siming let her fingers brush past the items she placed on a piece of pink cloth, admiring all of them one by one, before she turned her eyes to the front again, imagining that Yu Ji was still there.

"Their story that I wrote before was too painful. The had drunk so many cups of water of oblivion, but their souls still couldn't forget the pain of their experience."

"But there is no memory that water of oblivion cannot erase."

"I cannot bear to see their souls suffering that way...their past lives' wish, I want to grant it, so that their souls can finally rest in peace."

"..."

"Say, Zhinü. Will you help me?"

---

'We've finished our meeting. I don't think you're in your room. Let's have dinner together, at the hotel's top restaurant. 7pm'

She glanced at the message from Mengyi on her phone, stuffed it back into her bag and walked towards the lift lobby when she saw the aforementioned boss standing there, also waiting. Her heart raced again and stood a distance away from him.

"Hey, you're Mengyi's sister, aren't you? I haven't introduced myself properly. I'm Xiang Wang. Just call me Xiang Wang, everyone calls me that." He held out his hand. Yu Ji took it and shook hands with him.

"I'm Yu Mi-I mean Yu Ji. Just call me Yu Ji too." She almost slipped her real name to him, the name she didn't like. Luckily she managed to stop her own tongue in the nick of time and told him her stage name instead.

"Your show the other day...it was amazing."

"Oh, thanks for coming. You seem interested in fashion." Amazing? People said I literally cried and now I'm without any job arrangements.

"Our company is venturing into new business, fashion. I'm just trying to understand more of it."

"Mhm..." She nodded along with his words, before asking, "do you have dinner plans tonight? Since it's our first time meeting, my brother will pay." Yu Ji smiled and was met with a chuckle from him.

Do you know what is fate? Do you believe in reincarnation? Do you believe in...karmic debts from your past life that you owe to others?

When people died, they were given water of oblivion to forget all the memories from their past lives. However for the two lovers, although their new bodies couldn't remember their past lives, their souls couldn't forget the pain of the tragic love they went through.

Because deities pitied their souls that suffered through innumerable reincarnations, they were reborn in the modern world, given a chance to meet again and recover what was lost and forgotten-their love.

The price to pay, however, was to pass the same trials that separated them in the past.

She was Yu Miaoyi or Yu Ji, the woman who promised to love him even if they were lifetimes apart.

He was Xiang Yu, the man who promised to love her even if they were lifetimes apart.
