A Simple Dinner

A Simple Dinner

Apr 07, 2018

"Why didn't you stop me?!" He roared the moment he learnt of whatever that had happened. Both his hands gripped onto his head that felt like exploding in that instance. He could barely open his eyes without feeling the world turning around, his dizziness was on another whole new level.

"I did. You didn't listen to me." Yu Ji grabbed a bottled water from the table beside the television and walked over to her brother's bed, handing it to him. Mengyi reluctantly took the bottle, opened it and drank it, only to groan uncomfortably and put the water on the side table uncapped.

"Oh god, my throat's too dry to even drink. This water tastes weird." He scrunched up his face in disguise.

"That's what hangover is, idiot." The young woman walked over to the small fridge, bent over, rummaged through its content before picking out a bag of chocolate and tearing the wrapping open.

"Wait what time is-" He turned his body around, finding a digital clock placed on the side table and screamed on top of his lungs, surprising Yu Ji who dropped some of her chocolates on the floor.

"What're you shouting fo-"

"I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!" At that very moment, the doorbell was rung and he lost the colours on his face as he squeezed his eyes shut praying to god. He hastily walked over to the door, opening it and finding his boss Xiang Wang at the doorstep.

After a while, Mengyi came back to the room and tapped on the shoulders of his sister. She turned around, looking at him with irritated eyes when he grinned sheepishly, "I need your help."

"What?!" She squinted his eyed at him, making sure that she looked fierce enough to him.

"Ca-can you...replace me?"

---

She put on her shades, cap and mask as usual. Then, she paired a plain black t-shirt with her white shorts and sneakers before she opened the door to her room and found him standing right at the doorstep, his hand almost touched the doorbell. He stared at her from head to toe and she did the same to him, he was dressed finely in formal suit.

"I really don't have any other clothes and I must cover my face so..."

"It's okay. We're only going to be looking at some clothes today. I'm the one who's overdressed. Wait, I'll...go and get changed."

They headed to several shopping malls and department stores. He picked out some outfits and asked for her opinions on the clothes while she gave her view as a fashion model. This went on for several hours until it was time for lunch and they headed for a quick lunch. Then they continued the same cycle until it was past six and she was literally cursing her brother in her heart for putting her in such trouble.

Everything would have been faster if he didn't take a look at almost all the clothes around. I'm so tired, seriously.

"Let's have dinner, I know a good place," he said when they were both in his car. He just drove off without even receiving her approval, though she secretly agreed in her heart. They arrived at a street-side small restaurant, with wooden tables and stools placed around the front. He parked his car at the side and came out as she followed. He chose a cleaner table and they both sat down, while an old lady approached them, wearing an apron on her body.

"What do you want? There's the menu, I'm treating," he said as he pointed towards the widely-printed menu plastered on the wall.

"I don't know what's nice here, you know. Why don't you order for us?" Hearing that, Xiang Wang just ordered several dishes for both of them and the old woman went away, leaving the two alone.

"I'm surprised you know I'm 29," Yu Ji tried to dig out information from him while her hands pulled out two pairs of chopsticks and handed one to him.

"That...ah...I saw it online."

"Online? You searched for me online?" Xiang Wang was just caught red-handed and he was too stunned to reply. He looked at the floor, thinking hard to conjure up a reason before he finally gave in.

"I was curious...since Mengyi said his sister is a model." The old woman came with the food her ordered and placed them on the table one by one.

"Oh...let's eat." They continued to talk about random things so as to have a less awkward dinner. When they were finished, he waved his hand towards the old woman and paid her some cash. When they were gathering their stuffs to leave, the old woman came again and said, "you two, have you forgotten something?"

"Huh?" They both looked at each other before they looked at the old woman again. Her eyes seemed dark and clouded, she was staring straight past them as she talked.

"Have you forgotten something important?" she asked once again.

"I don't think we forgot any-"

Suddenly the old woman slammed her hand on the table and said, "your change."

---

The car ride on the way back to the hotel was silent throughout, none of them tried to make any small talks. When they arrived, they both came out and he passed the keys to the valet while she waited.

He nodded at her and they both headed into the hotel, to the lift lobby and they were already on the level of their rooms. When she arrived in front of her room, she took out her key card when she heard, "can I...have you number?"

She turned around, finding him standing right behind her, looking nervous, surprisingly.

"Do you...want to meet up after we go back...?" he continued. She was a little dumbfounded but felt a little flattered.

"Do you always do this with other women?" she joked while letting out a short laugh, an obvious sign that she didn't know what to do in these kind of situations.

"No. Just...you." His answer was firm. She looked at him dubiously before holding out her hand.

"What?" he asked.

"Your phone? I need to enter my number, don't I?"

Do you know what is fate? Do you believe in reincarnation? Do you believe in...karmic debts from your past life that you owe to others?

When people died, they were given water of oblivion to forget all the memories from their past lives. However for the two lovers, although their new bodies couldn't remember their past lives, their souls couldn't forget the pain of the tragic love they went through.

Because deities pitied their souls that suffered through innumerable reincarnations, they were reborn in the modern world, given a chance to meet again and recover what was lost and forgotten-their love.

The price to pay, however, was to pass the same trials that separated them in the past.

She was Yu Miaoyi or Yu Ji, the woman who promised to love him even if they were lifetimes apart.

He was Xiang Yu, the man who promised to love her even if they were lifetimes apart.
