“Vale, do you think I have a chance?" Lorenzo asked him as he nervously fiddled his thumbs. The boy was the youngest to run for senate, at first glance you'd think he was in his twenties, an attractive young man with brunette hair and eyes that always seemed to be smiling.
"Of course, you've got as good as a chance as any of the other candidates! The people trust you and your family, they know what you're capable of, and they know you can change the country for the better" Vale said confidently as he patted Lorenzo's shoulder.
Vale was particularly good at lying, a talent all demons possessed. What he just said wasn’t a complete lie though, he was sure that the boy would grab a spot in the senate.
It was true that Lorenzo had support, lots of it, mostly from young women all over the country, "THAT-ONE-HOT-GUY-WHO’S-RUNNING-IN-THE-ELECTIONS" they'd call him since he looked more like a celebrity than a politician.
And the boy was capable, that part was also true, Lorenzo graduated with a political science degree in one of the country's most prestigious universities.
The only part where Vale lied was the last part. Yes, Lorenzo could possibly change the country for the better but Vale wasn’t going to let that happen, not again.
Vale was lost in his thoughts , he was too busy daydreaming of regaining the glory he had once lost.
"Hey! Vale! Are you even listening?" Lorenzo snapped a finger in front of him.
“Ah? What? Sorry, what were you saying? " Vale jolted, going back to reality.
"I said my dad got me a secretary, he's coming tomorrow! " Lorenzo replied in a mildly annoyed tone.
"What? A secretary? I can handle everything by myself! " Vale was confused. A secretary? Why so sudden?
"Dad said you're getting old and that I shouldn't overwork you . Don’t worry, you won’t be losing your job, he’ll only be here to help us around. " the boy told him reassuringly.
Still, Vale worried that this might compromise his plan that he worked on for more than 30 years.
"But Ren-"
"No buts!” Lorenzo cut him off. “You're getting more vacation time whether you like it or not. Too bad Dad already picked a man for the job, if I were to choose I'd get a pretty girl for you instead". He was now wiggling his eyebrows at him.
"I don't care about women..." Vale murmured, the demon was slowly losing his composure.
"Oh so you mean? You would rather....with men?" Lorenzo asked wide eyed, genuinely curious.
"What? No! What I meant was that I don’t have any interest in romance! I’m fine with my current workload, Ren. Please, we don’t need a secretary." Vale was feeling hopeless now that Lorenzo was just cheekily grinning at him. He knew that the boy wasn't taking him seriously. There was no more point in arguing, he knew Lorenzo all too well, there was no changing his mind anymore.
"I'll be out with my friends tomorrow. You, on the other hand, should be here at around 10 am to greet and show the new guy around, okay?" Lorenzo said cheerfully as he patted Vale’s back. A few minutes later he was already out the door waving Vale goodbye.
