Across the city in a small, two bedroom apartment sat three girls across from a television. A nostalgic sitcom rerun was playing, but none of the girls cared. Something was up.
"What do you think made Shae so happy? Whatever was in that text had him practically skipping out of the cafeteria," Farrah questioned, twiddling her thumbs, "Do you think I should be worried?" Adelah leaned back against the couch.
"I don't know. Did you try calling him?"
"Yeah, he won't answer any of my texts, and every time I call him, it goes to voicemail." Adelah stared at the ceiling in thought. Farrah was always the first person Shae told good news to. Bad news, as well. What could make him hide something from her now?
Charli spoke up, "Don't give up hope on him just yet. I'm sure Shae will tell you tomorrow. We still don't know what made him so happy, but I think if it were something big, he would have told you."
"Yeah, but what if it was? What do I do, then?"
"You do what you've always done. Show him your support. No matter what, the fact that he tells you means he wants you to share in his happiness." Charli shows Farrah a sympathetic smile. "And if it does end up being something small like I think it will, you should still show him your support. It might be big in his eyes."
Adelah sits upright and asks, "Do you even know of anything big that Shae's waiting to hear back on? He didn't tell me of any plans for transferring schools or of a job promotion. I can't think of anything."
"That brat better not be thinking of leaving me! We agreed to graduate together."
"Exactly. You shouldn't get upset by this. Shae's fine," Charli told Farrah.
"Okay, I guess." Farrah stood up and began walking to the door. "I have to get to work. I'll see you guys tomorrow. Thanks for listening to me whine."
Adelah shook her head. "No, it's okay. Everyone gets worried over their friends."
"Yeah, Adelah's right. It just shows how close you guys are," Charli agreed. The two warmed at the sight of Farrah.
"Thanks! You guys are the best." Farrah shut the door behind her as she left.
Charli slipped her fingers underneath Adelah's knees and pulled them on her lap. Adelah froze at the gentle touch.
Staring at Charli's profile, Adelah muttered, "I didn't think we'd see a smile from her. I'm glad we made Farrah feel better." Charli clicked off the news.
"I just hope Shae talks to her about it tomorrow. I don't want her getting worried again."
Adelah's gaze slithered down to the slender fingers pressing the channel button. Her own fingers touched her lips unconsciously.
"Me, too," Adelah mumbled.
Charli looked up at the sound of the distracted voice, her mouth growing dry at the sight before her. Adelah's reddened skin, her blonde hair that had fallen over her dark blue eyes, the sensual touch of her fingers as they caressed her lips.
The sight drove Charli insane.
This is too much, Charli thought as she jumped off the couch and strode into the bathroom, forcing Adelah to snap out of her trance as her legs jerked to the side. Adelah flinched as the bathroom door slammed shut.
With her eyes wide, Adelah mumbled, "Charli?" Adelah trodded over to the bathroom door and said, "Did I do something wrong?" The sounds of panting could be heard from inside. Adelah gripped the doorknob, the only thing stopping her from turning it being Charli's next words.
"Nn--No. I'm sorry, I just really need to pee," Charli told her, wishing for Adelah to go away. She muffled her heavy breathing and looked into the mirror. It's all your fault, Charli told herself, If you hadn't fallen for her, we wouldn't be in this position. Adelah wouldn't be worried, and you wouldn't be trying to forget her, forget that erotic creature. Charli averted her gaze, unable to look herself in the eye, to see all her shame. "This is your fault," she whispered.
"Are you sure?" Adelah's shaken voice echoed in Charli's ears. Her body tingled.
"Yeah. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," Charli said, "Ha-ha, I guess those two waters went straight through me." Charli mentally slapped herself. Stupid! Who even says that anymore?
"Uh, okay." Adelah waited a moment before going to sit back on the couch. She waited for Charli to ease her nerves.
After a few minutes, Charli walked out of the bathroom and headed for the kitchen.
"Wait! Aren't you going to watch TV with me?" Adelah asked, not wanting Charli to leave her. Charli eyed her with uncertainty.
"But, I need to get dinner started."
"Dinner can wait. Let's hang out for a little." Adelah showed Charli a smile she hoped would work on her. Charli huffed. Her legs stepped towards the piece of leather as the thundering in her head became almost unbearable. All Charli wanted to do was run, but she couldn't disappoint her best friend.
"Just for a little bit." Charli sat down next to Adelah, who laid her head on Charli's lap.
"I thought I might've done something to upset you, but I'm glad I didn't," Adelah said, looking at the screen before her. Charli stared at the blonde field begging for a touch. Her fingers slowly closed the gap and dug through the silky strands.
There you go again, pulling me back to you. Charli told her, "You could never do anything to upset me."
At Charli's tender voice, Adelah closed her eyes and leaned further into the comfort Charli's fingers brought her.
"You always say that," she smiled.
