Raina cursed the lighting of the classroom. It interfered with the books she was reading. Everybody was also talking too loud, and the teacher didn’t even glance in their direction. Why was High school so chaotic? No one really had anything to talk about but fashion, grades, fashion, clothes, and fashion. Everyone was just so self centered!
“Having trouble reading too?”
Raina turned her head as fast as her spine permitted her. What greeted her was a girl with, strangely, pure white hair, and even stranger, turquoise eyes. There wasn’t any other way to describe them.
“U-um, it’s not that bad…”
“Woah! Is that Percy Jackson?! I love that series!” Raina looked at the girl and noticed that she had the same book in her hands. It only took a few minutes before the two were happily chatting away. Mind you, even high schoolers can be big fans of Percy Jackson.

Kiara slammed her locker, and coming after it, was a startled shriek.
Well, it wasn’t really a shriek. It was more like some sort of high, unwavering note. Which was soon followed by a bunch of words that made no sense to Kiara. Despite not being able to understand Kiara was fairly sure that the source of the noise was not in a good mood. In fact, once she located the source of the noise she was absolutely positive that the person she had slammed her locker on was probably not going to thank her.
A girl with black hair and slightly crazy yellow eyes was shouting words, no, they were probably curses, in a different language.
Kiara’s eyes widened. “I’m really sorry!” But then her throat betrayed her. Laughter bubbled through. No! Not now! But to her surprise, the other girl was laughing too.
“I can’t believe google translate actually works! If I keep this up, I won’t curse at all anymore.” She pulled herself up, and offered a hand to Kiara.
“My name is Sela. What’s yours?” Kiara took the hand.
“It’s Kiara.” The girl named Sela snickered.
“I wonder if they purposely make the lockers as rusty as they can.” Kiara smiled. This girl was a little blunt with words, but that just made it funnier.
“Yeah, I can just imagine the founder of this school purposely smelting used drawer handles for the metal. Their assistant would ask why, and they would say, ‘it builds character in high schoolers! I mean, would they rather carry a backpack all day?”
Sela sighed. “I would rather carry a backpack the whole day, though.” She peeked at the other lockers. “So, how’s school?”
They chattered and bantered all the way to class, where Sirena and Raina were waiting. It seemed that the four new friends had the same first period. Sirena muttered at Sela as she walked past, “I told you so, that high school would be fun. I told you s-”
Sela pushed her. “Shove a sock in it.”

Kiara sighed regretfully. “I’m not with you second period. I have geography. I have to go. Bye!”
The three other friends waved. They were all going to History. Raina lead the way, just staring at the colorfully painted walls as she walked by. So much for smokewall high school. Sela and Sirena lagged behind. Sela was scribbling furiously on a big notepad. Sirena muttered into Sela’s ear.
“I see Kiara as a dolphin don’t you?” Sela nodded quickly, and sketched a small dolphin jumping in the air. “But I think it’s too soon to tell if she’s a huntress or not. Also, I think Raina is a leopard.” She proceeded to draw the big cat with all the rosettes. Raina turned. “Did you ask me something?”
The girls turned, as if caught in a spotlight. They tried to keep their faces straight, as they said, “No, it was nothing at all.”
Suddenly, two boys walked by. One was short, with black hair and moody eyes. The other one was also short, with a light buzz cut, and flat brown eyes. Raina accidentally collided with the dark-eyed one. All his notebooks and folders spilled out of his hands.
He glared at Raina. “What’s your problem? Don’t you watch where you’re going?”
She glared right back. “What’s that to you? I was just walking around when you crashed into me!”
They went back and forth, exchanging insults. Sela and Sirena eyed Raina warily. She looked like she wanted to attack. Finally, the one with the buzz cut sniggered. “Hey, Narayon, you two are bickering like a married couple!”
The two glared at him. “Shut up, Samir!” Narayon growled, and he stalked off into a classroom...which was the three friends’ second period class. Sela drew a tiny rat on her notepad, which she and Sirena agreed mirrored Narayon’s personality. She drew a line connecting the leopard and the rat, and on the line, one tiny dash.
