The gang, their cuddle instincts satiated, walked to their cars, giggling about how cute their animals were. Charli chattered on about the rabbit she held, getting a little smile from Adelah as she remembered the twinkle in Charli's eye, the same one that sent her chest into a tizzy.
Farrah noticed Adelah's smile and smiled herself; she was glad Adelah was finding love at last. All the years they had known each other, Farrah was the only one who had experienced the barbed pleasure. Yes, it could sometimes be painful, but the joy of having that special someone in your life far outweighed the pain.
Lucky for Adelah, Charli was the best candidate. Farrah knew she wouldn't deliberately harm Adelah. After all, every time Farrah saw Charli with Adelah, her expression betrayed her. The look in her eyes--it was Adelah's alone. Farrah couldn't remember a time when it wasn't. Charli had only ever showed her affection for Adelah, no one else.
Rain interrupted Charli's prattling and began to talk about how he saw a creature so alluring he was left speechless. It's beauty alone was breathtaking. The others wondered which animal he talked about, but Rain refused to answer.
"If I tell you, my sweet secret would be taken from me," Rain told them. They all huffed in defeat. Rain wouldn't give it up no matter how much they would ask. Whatever creature it was meant a lot to him.
Out of the corner of his eye, Rain glanced at Farrah as she chatted with Adelah over the cute kittens. Adelah found a black, smoky one in particular that she grew fond of. She vowed to return to see her.
Rain chuckled to himself, Cat's like you so much because you're just like them, one of their kind. Rain's gaze slipped over and stopped on Farrah. He looked between the two.
Farrah was a few inches shorter than he but much taller than Adelah, who held the title of 'tiniest critter of the bunch'. If the rest were giants, Adelah was a small chipmunk. Well, excluding Shae, who stood an inch or two taller than her. He would be a squirrel.
As the gang reached their two cars, one being Shae's, and the other being Rain's, they all said their goodbyes.
"I'll see you guys tomorrow," Charli told them, holding Rain's back door open.
Rain grabbed her arm and whispered into her ear, "Actually, I was hoping to take Farrah home. Do you think you could help me?" Charli glanced over to Farrah, seeing her about to hop in Shae's car, before nodding. She ran over and gripped Farrah's shoulder.
"What is it?" Farrah asked, looking at Charli over her shoulder.
"I was hoping Shae could take us home." Charli signaled Adelah and herself. "I hope that's okay. I need to talk to Shae about something. Something you can't hear."
"Something I can't hear? Why? Aren't we friends, too?"
"Yeah, but I want it to be a surprise." Farrah saw the desperate pleading in her eyes.
She huffed, "Fine, but how am I supposed to go home?" Rain stepped forward.
"I can take you if you want." Farrah looked him over in suspicion.
"Fine." Farrah stormed over to Rain's car, upset she couldn't ride with her best friend. How was Farrah going to tell Shae about her talk with Rain? She didn't want to text him. It was easier in person.
"Wait!" Shae shouted. Farrah turned around to see him running towards her. Shae pulled her to the side.
"What is it?" Farrah asked him. She glanced over to the rest, who stood dumbstruck at Shae's outburst. Shae's gentle fingers grasped her shoulders.
"Will you be okay?" Farrah saw a halo above his head. It warmed her heart.
She placed her own hand on his shoulder and said in a kind tone, "Haha, will you? You'll be stuck with Charli and Adelah's lovey-doveyness alone."
"I'm serious, Fare. I'm worried about you." The mock smile wiped from Farrah's lips as Shae's gaze kept stern.
"Sorry, I'll be fine." Farrah took a fleeting glimpse of Rain, who stared at her, his eyes full of worry. "He's not such a bad guy like I thought." Shae followed her gaze, noticing her soft demeanor. He nodded.
"Okay, but let me know if anything happens. I'll race over." Farrah looked at him, her hand ruffling his hair a moment later.
"You bet," her chipper voice said.
With his nerves gone, Shae glanced up at her and said, "I'm going to see Kylian after he gets off work." Farrah's eyes widened.
"You are?" She began to bounce up and down, her excitement as clear as day.
"Yea--" Shae's words were cut off when a pair of arms wrapped around him.
"Text right after, okay? Not tomorrow. Today. I'll be waiting by my phone, so don't you dare forget. Ahh, this is so exciting! I can't wait to hear everything," Farrah exclaimed, "I wonder what you guys will do. Did you plan anything?" Shae tapped her arm.
"Fare--can't--breathe."
"Oh!" Farrah released him from her death grip. She smoothed his clothes. "Sorry..."
"It's okay. I didn't plan anything. I thought I'd just let the night take us wherever."
"Hmm, okay. Don't forget to tell me what happened later, okay? I mean it!"
Shae chuckled, "Right, right. I won't forget, I swear." Farrah lit up.
"Okay, then I think I'll go before Rain blows his lid." Shae looked to see Rain staring at them. It was clear if they took any longer, he would've started to pace the parking lot.
"Haha, okay. I'll talk to you later."
Farrah ran over to Rain, calling, "I'll be waiting!" She apologized to Rain, who shook his head, and hopped in his car. Shae waved as Rain glanced at him. He gave a meek wave back and hopped in his car. The engine roared to life.
As the car drove away, Farrah rolled down her window and screamed, "I mean it, Shae! Don't you forget!"
"I won't!" he yelled back.
As the car turned down the street, Shae mumbled to himself, "I hope I don't. She'll kill me for sure."
