Around that time, people also started associating rock music with devil worship. Vale has mixed opinions about this, he’d say that it really depends on the band or artist in question. But Devil worship or not, it’s obviously not the kind of behavior an angel such as Nathaniel should be seen doing. It would get him demoted at the very least. And thus, Vale came up with a little agreement that would make his work a little easier. The demon would keep Nat’s double life a secret if the other stopped sending angels after him, Nat was in charge of angel placement after all. Nat agreed and Vale didn’t have to worry about divine intervention ever since. Well, not until today.
“This is a different case, this one’s out of my control…” said Nat.
“How so?”
“Well, usually ,work orders come from management, you know, those guys from the Second Sphere. I can easily send false reports to them, that’s what I’ve been doing to your cases all this time. But this one…”
Nathaniel took out his smart phone, opened an email, and showed it to Vale.
“Yes, and I understand angel writing,” replied Vale, sarcastically. In front of him was a mess of unfamiliar runes and symbols.
“It’s the address of this house, and over here it says...” Nathaniel pointed to the symbols at the very bottom. “Evil is at hand.”
Vale raised a questioning eyebrow at him.
“And so? That’s me, I’m evil. I don’t see what the big deal is.”
“You don’t understand. This is a direct message from HIM! The BIG GUY himself! I can’t send HIM false reports! HE’LL know!” replied Nat, frantic.
“So your solution to this is…that guy?”
“Yes, I can’t directly disobey HIM but I can make this easier for you,” said Nat.
Vale didn’t look convinced, he rubbed his temples and sighed.
“How exactly will that dimwit make things easier for me? Huh?”
“Exactly! He’s a dim- I mean uhh… he’s new. This is his first assignment on earth and he has no idea how this world works. I picked him specially for this case. It’ll be an easy win for you!” exclaimed Nat while nudging the demon’s shoulder. Vale slapped it away.
“I have no patience for-”
Vale was interrupted by the blaring of car alarms. Nat ran outside and the demon followed. They found Jess awkwardly hugging the back of the car.
“I tried asking it nicely but then it started screaming!” reasoned the angel.
“Give me that!” Nat snatched the keys from him and took out two suitcases from the trunk.
“I have to go now,” Nat faced Jess and faked a smile. “Good luck with your first assignment.”
As the car left the driveway, the windows rolled down, Nathaniel simply nodded to Vale. The demon nodded back.
