Alex quickly realized that sometimes, there are moments in life you just can’t understand, or don’t want to understand. As he raised his arms against this extremely eager dog and it lunged straight for him, the very next sound he heard was a yelp. The dog seemed to have gone flying hundreds of feet in the air, missing Alex by a considerable margin and spinning off into the distance. Alex stood there for several moments, trying to process the sight of what was essentially a flying dog. He had to quickly look away though, as the sky itself seemed to try and assault his mind.
“What kind of sick joke is this?” He asked himself, before shaking his head. He decided he would head to his friend James’s house, to try and find somewhere to rest at the very least. I swear to god, if he brags about his powers even once I’m going to smack him in his teeth, Alex promised himself. Envy, fear, confusion, adrenaline, so many emotions were pouring through Alex and putting him into a considerably foul mood.
It wasn't long before he reached the doorstep to the respectable sized house. James had inherited the property, but it by no means meant he wasn't smart enough to manage it; James was very business savvy. Alex knocked on the blue, recently painted door, playing a small tune across his knuckles, before silently waiting for a response. A quick second later, a short man, with mousy brown hair, huge bags under his brown eyes and what seemed to be a onesie with turtles on it opened the door, a huge grin emanating from him as he saw Alex.
"You wanna see it, yeah?" James mumbled through a practically giddy smile.
"Not really, look can I come in? I'm in a well bad mood," Alex pushed past James before hearing his response.
"So um, why're you here?" James asked quizzically.
"So you know how everyone been getting these powers right?"
"Yeah course, small price to pay but totally worth it,"
"Right, well thing is... Wait, what price?"
"You know, like how we all hear that thing in our heads, an it wants us to find and kill anyone who don't got no power, surely it told you already?" James pointed at his temple as he said this, implying the voice in his head. A chill went down Alex's back; apparently he was a wanted man.
"Right, course... So, um, how do we tell if someone ain't got any powers?" Alex shifted about nervously, sort of just loitering in the hallway to James's house.
"Ah yeah, it's well cool, I tested it on my neighbors dog, course it had magic though, so basically you just gotta touch someones temples an you'll like, know, if that makes sense?" Alex relieved some of his tension, if only mildly. So long as he didn't let people touch his face, he should be alright.
"Look you try it on me, it's pretty cool really," James insisted, grabbing Alex's hands and placing them on his head, to which Alex smiled uncomfortably.
"Er, yeah, I can like, feel the magic, or something?" He said nervously, to which James smiled broadly.
"Yeah it's well cool innit? Course i'm not sure i'd be able to kill someone if I did find them," James laughed, walking towards the kitchen.
"Hey, you want a beer?" Alex heard him crack one open, but didn't offer a response, he was thinking, planning his next move.
"So James, um, what is your power?"
"Aw I'll show ya, you'll be well jelly," James seemed giddy once more as he quickly ran outside and stood next to a car on the street, chugging his beer.
"Ready?" He tossed his beer aside and lifted up the car, easily over his head, with a single hand. At least, that's what it seemed like upon first glance. As Alex peered closer he noticed a small, red vapor emanating from James's palm, which seemed to be the thing doing the actual lifting.
"Wow, that's really cool man," Alex couldn't completely hide the shake in his voice, as fear enveloped him once more. If he was found out then James would have no trouble killing him. Alex was sure this monster in his head would manipulate his thoughts. Soon it wouldn't be the same James anymore.
"Hey James, how do I meet the one who gave us our powers?"Alex asked, not sure he wanted the answer.
"Oh well, apparently, from what this hive-mind thing is telling me, if you don't have any power you'll be taken before the Great One and they'll feast upon your soul, kinda awesome like a movie! You know? But Alex, you should know this really, you are connected to it too, aren't you?"
"Oh yeah, um no, I think maybe only some powers get to hear it? Maybe?" Alex gritted his teeth and hoped that answer was satisfactory.
"Alex... You do have the power, don't you?" James asked, taking a step toward him.
"Alex, show it to me, please, the voice is getting mad at me," James clutched his head and stepped closer to Alex once more, probably only four or five paces before he is in reaching distance.
"O-of course I do! It's just um, dangerous so I can't really you know, like explosive and stuff yeah?" Alex wasn't even believing his own words, the disappointment on James's face was as clear as day.
"I'm sorry Alex... You're lying," Then he lunged.
