Never did Lola believe that she will return on a field mission. After all these years, when the only times she has used her strength have been when reaching out for the furthest beer, she is nervous.
She does not have any weapon nor the time to think of a better plan on how to stop the clone. Instead, she wants to bring the kid with her. Su is a clone… The Ar clone is a clone… If it’s their own kind, maybe the kid will convince him to stop, right?
When was that time when the Boss told her that she solves her missions with great intelligence? Because he was drunk too when he said that.
Passing the brave –or stupid– people that stay hidden to take videos, Lola arrives on the Allington Street and has to take a few steps back in shock. The Ar clone stands tall and emotionless in the middle of the street, hands bloody. There are two human bodies laid on the sidewalk, and one of a police officer at his feet. A memory flashes back into her mind. The image of the clone reminds her of Doctor Gallimore on his murder spree.
Without thinking, Lola jumps on his back and drags him on an alley between buildings, far away from the people he can kill. Struggling to get out of her holding, he steps backwards until he bumps her hard on the building’s wall. But Lola does not let go. How will she fight someone that does not feel pain? Does she have to take his heart out to end it all? But how?
The Ar clone peeks at her to study her face. “You can’t stop the revolution.”
Revolution?
“What did you say?” Lola asks if maybe she didn’t hear him right. But the clone does not respond. He grabs her hands and hurls her over his shoulder. She falls with the back on the cold ground.
A clone revolution?
Seeing that he is about to crush her head with his foot, she rolls over in time and lifts her body up in a quick move.
The new plan is to tire him out until John arrives.
The people that taught her how to fight since she joined the Agency always scolded her for her messy way of fighting. Lola does not know the names of her moves. But she subconsciously makes sound effects every time. ‘Pow’ a punch in the face. ‘Boom’ a kick in the stomach. She truly feels like a martial art master sometimes.
Su thinks that she looks like a monkey climbing trees from a documentary he’s seen in his room in the labs. Many would think that Su made a joke, but in fact, he is truly fascinated. He is watching everything from the alley's opening. The Ar sees him and pushes Lola –who stumbles and falls– to walk towards the kid.
“Stay away from him,” Lola shouts in panic, but it doesn’t reach. The clone raises a hand but before it can touch the boy, he stops in his tracks. Fresh blood pours down his mouth. He was shot in the back of his neck. Su stares in the eyes of the clone that does not react, but is only making gurgling sounds. Another shot that startles Su gives the clone a new wound right where his heart should be.
The Ar tilts his head to the boy before he falls flat right at Su’s feet.
John, who fired the shots, sighs and puts his gun down. Lola pats her former partner’s shoulder in a thank you. He came right on time.
“Good work,” John says, but Lola didn’t do any work.
She shrugs anyway. “What’s going to happen with the clone?” It will take several minutes for his wound to regenerate and get back to his senses.
“I’ll take it to the Agency. Find out why it rebelled and then, I guess, it will be executed.”
Lola sees how Su flinches at the last word. The kid is staring at the Ar’s body while holding his palm over his chest. Where his heart beats. Like he is protecting it. He just witnessed how without a care and easy is for humans to talk about terminating his own kind. Maybe the Ar had a good reason for what he did. But clones are expendable. Just like Su.
And because of that, Su –for the first time since he’s been conscious– is scared.
