There was a knock at the door that spread throughout the house echoing. I approached the door opening it slowly revealing it was Percy. He stood at my doorstep with tears streaming down his face. He tried to hide it, but he was failing. I could hear his voice shake, "Can I come inside?" I stood to the side and gestured for him to come inside. He sat on the chair facing the fire and said "I needed to talk to someone. How do you do it, both of you? How do you kill and just walk away like nothing happened?" Both Mary and I were confused, her more than me because as far as she was aware, he had killed a lot of people. The person who should be more upset is Mary because she watched her dad die right in front of her but she barely even flinched. "Shall I get the wine? It will help him relax."
"Sure, but I need to talk to you." We both walked into the kitchen. It was clean, it looked like someone had cleaned the sides, washed the pots, and cleaned the floor. Mary said, "Wilfred's been home. It's a good thing we gave him that key." She reached the cupboard that held the wine and poured out three glasses. I could tell she wanted to poison Percy's the intent glowed like fire in her eyes. I had to stop her, "We don't really have the time to get rid of the body, I'd like to do it as far away from the house as possible. Plus there will be blood do you know how difficult it is to remove blood stains from carpet?" I didn't notice at first but it was written in the report his legs were covered in blood.
We returned to the living room. Mary placed the wine on the table in the middle and said, "This is how I do it," she took a drink, "liquid courage." She poured him a glass carefully measuring how much she added. He was outraged, "How do you expect me to trust any drink from you when that's how you killed Harry. I think."
"Because you're my friend."
"Harry was your friend as well."
"No, he was never my friend. We were acquaintances nothing more, nothing less." She pushed the glass closer to him she was getting angry. "Now drink." They looked at each other eye to eye, not moving an inch. "You seem to have cheered up." He turned to face me, "Yes, I have." Wilfred came downstairs to break the awkwardness, "It sounds like I am needed." He grabbed a box of tissues and walked up to Percy who said, "I'm fine now, I don't need any tissues." To which Wilfred responded,
"These aren't for you, you got the table wet. Could you stand up for a bit?" He stood up whispering to himself, "Rude."
I decided to change the subject. "How long have you been here?"
"Long enough to hear your little chat, and yes those stains are hard to remove so not in the house, thank you." When he was done, and let Percy sit back down, he got a chair from the kitchen, placed it facing Mary, and sat down. Mary asked, "Would you like some wine? It's your favourite." Mary had already poured him a glass and placed it down in front of him. Once he had finished, he said "I never wanted to be a butler, no sane person would ever accept a life of servitude. I was getting a better job as a journalist but my parents died and I was forced to work for your servitude. It's in your blood, that's what my sister told me. So I took the job, I work for the industry that kills hopes and dreams." The whole room fell silent but I could tell everyone was thinking the same thing. Wilfred poured himself another drink and drank it patiently. "Well as all of us are here I suppose it's best we all do it at the same time." He stood up, dusted off his pants and walked towards the basement. "Follow me."
Mary asked,"Where are you going." But Wilfred's response was simply, "Please no questions till we get down there then ask away, but for now, I would appreciate silence." He spoke in an old weathered voice as he leads us past the creaking oil lamps and rotting wooden staircase. The basement looked different, uncomfortably so. I asked, "Wilfred would you mind telling us what we are doing down here? With all this dust."
"Something we should have done a long time ago. You are going to March into that room and beg for forgiveness. This has gone too far and I seek to end it by the end of the day."
