"I don't want to die yet."

"Most don't."

Mikayla pondered the situation. "Emmit?"

"Girl?"

"Will you miss me if I die?"

"Honestly?"

She sighed. What have I even done with my life, anyway? Got a psychology degree, and... nothing. I don't even have any friends that will miss me.

"Do not take it personally, girl," Emmit said, "I have just seen an awful lot of people like you, and, if I missed every one of them, that would be a very big burden on my shoulders. Surely you have family back at home who will miss you?"

"Well, my parents certainly won't. I doubt my mom even remembers my name, and my dad certainly doesn't care enough to think about it."

"Stop moping. I'm sure a few people will miss you when-- ah, if-- you die."

Mikayla blinked, for once, not in annoyance, but instead in an attempt to hold back the moisture that threatened to spill out. "My grandmother probably will. She was very sweet, looked after me when my dad didn't. That's about it though."

"Oh. Well then, I guess I might miss you a little. You are the first girl who decided to try and run headfirst through the barrier, after all."

She tried to smile at him, but it didn't come out very well.

"Get some rest. It's a big day tomorrow."

Mikayla went to sleep with a tear making its way down her cheek.
