The days passed quickly from the small incident. Me best friend finding out that I am not a demoness half breed hedgehog but a experimented human girl from some other dimension. Neither me nor him spoke, to one another or our friends. We had both still gone out daily routines of chores and social time, not wanting others to think too deeply into our differences. I now lay on the roof of my shared home. The sun was setting low just above my head, turning the sky shades of warm colors that have always come to fascinate me. A light, chilling breeze blew by and through my thick pelt of ebony fur, cooling me from the days hard work heat.
“Midnight!”
I leisurely flutter my violet globes to the side of the roof, seeing Halu’s face peer over the edge.
“Dar found something and wants you to see.”
I nod but do not move to leave. Halu sighs and his long claws scratch against the stone as he goes back inside, through the window.
Dar… he’s my best friend and only person who knows the truth. The first person who had showed me kindness after all my years of torture. The only person who will forever know me best.
I groan in discomfort and sit up, pulling my head in my hands. I stay still until I open up to see the darkness of night. My feet wobble against my weight but I force them to walk me to the edge of the roof. Leaning over the side, I feel the top of the window with my fingertips. I then jump, glide on my wings, and land inside the square opening with experienced ease. My violet eyes look up and meet with golden ones. Dar lays in his bed, looking longer with his ebony-scaled body placed like a fallen tree on the opposing side of the room. We both stare for a moment before he looks elsewhere. His finger follows and points to the night stand.
I step down from the window and open the drawer, finding a picture. My heart breaks at what I see… my family. My was sitting in a wooden chair, holding my baby sister, and brother standing in the background. Our family theme was mahogany and so we all wore clothes with a red-purple tint.
“I was messing with one of Halu’s machines and made a portal. That was what came through.”
Dars voice was unfamiliar. This photo was unfamiliar. Nothing was familiar anymore. I was a simple, angel child who only dreamed, then her worst nightmare happened. She made her best and didn’t dwell and that was the only reason she could go on. The only thing that kept her happy and alive.
Muscular arms wrapped around my waist and a head is set in my lap. I look down to see Dar sadly gazing into nothingness. Without another heartbeat to think, I lean down and put the gentlest kiss on his head.
“Thank you,” I whisper.
He looks up at me. “For what?”
A smile creases my lips. “For putting me back together.”
