The nurse, who's name was Alexandra, took a deep breath and sighed as she finally got through her front door. The day was the longest she has ever had.
She took off her bag and gently set it down before unzipping it. The baby was sound asleep in the blankets and towels she had stuffed her bag with to shelter and warm the baby until they got home.
"Darling, is that you?" Called out her husband, Tom.
"Yes, my dear and I have a surprise." She said, picking up the child.
Tom came into the room and gasped. "A baby?" He asked. "But they said you were sterile."
"I 'adopted' her from work..." She said as she began the long explanation of what happened.
"He'll kill you once he realizes what you have done..." He said, worried as he looked at the baby.
"What did you want me to do? Kill a baby, just because it didn't show signs of serum?" Alex said, a little astounded to say the least.
Tom sighed as he asked to hold the child. Alex relinquished the child, passing her to Tom. Tom looked to the small bundle in his arms, and the baby seemed to look up at him and cooed. Tom's face lit up with a smile as the baby showed one too. "We did want a child..." He said. "If anyone asks, we adopted her from the shelter."
Alex's face brimmed with a smile of her own, the first one of the day.
