Nathaniel finally made his way to the main road after taking several wrong turns in the high end neighborhood. His GPS had not been working properly, it was also the reason of their being late to the Guevarra Manor earlier. It was odd, thought Nat, his phone also started acting up after receiving the message from the main office. Maybe tweaking his phone so it could connect to both the heavenly offices and the local telecommunications wasn't the best idea, he really should have bought a separate phone for work instead.
About 3 minutes in the open highway, his phone started ringing in the form of Holy Diver’s guitar riff.
Nat grumbled and glimpsed at the number showing on the screen. He realized that it was the number from the main office, the one that sent the message a few days ago.
Gotta get away-
get away
He shifted uncomfortably in his seat and straightened his back. He waited it out, hoping that it would stop ringing after a few minutes.
It didn’t.
Holy Diver
You're the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid
"Yeah yeah. I'll find somewhere to pull over," he mumbled, begrudgingly. Of course, being an angel, he should at least follow simple traffic rules. The angel took a sharp turn and parked in a small gas station. He picked up his phone with sweaty hands.
"Good day, this is Raziel from the main office. Is this Mr. Nathaniel who I’m speaking to?” answered the voice in the usual refined and elegant-sounding accent anyone would adapt after spending too much time in heaven.
"Yes. This is Nathaniel, Liberty Department’s Field Manager,” answered Nat as calmly as he could possibly manage. He gulped and waited for the worst.
“It has come to our attention that a job order was sent to you exactly 2 days ago using this number, am I correct?” said Raziel.
“Y-yes…” mumbled Nat. He realized that it would best to not tell them the details about the man he sent for the job unless they ask for it. They wouldn’t be happy if they found out that he sent a new recruit to earth and it would be a dead giveaway that something was up. If there’s one thing he learned from his years on earth, it’s that silence is your best friend, specially if you have secrets of your own.
“Well, it looks like someone tweaked with the system and sent a random address to your number. That’s why it doesn’t have a job description nor any of the other important details. We’re still looking into it but for the meantime, please dismiss the message and proceed with the usual business.”
“You mean, there’s no imminent threat in the said address? No evil? No work to be done?” asked Nat, confused.
A slew of questions filled his mind. Vale was there, wasn’t he? The demon who almost brought down a nation was in that exact address. Was he not considered a threat anymore? Did heaven make a mistake? Before sending in Jess, Nat thought of the possibility of it being a technical error or perhaps wrongly sent message. He did a quick inspection first and found Vale there, that was why he assumed that it was a legitimate job order and thus acted upon it accordingly.
“Yes. We checked beforehand and everything seems to be clear. Is there a problem?” asked Raziel.
Something wasn’t right and Nat wanted answers, it’s just he couldn’t ask them without giving himself away. “Oh no, nothing. Dismiss the message, got it.”
“That will be all. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your hard work, Mr. Nathaniel.”
