I woke up unable to breath. It didn't matter how many breaths I took in, or how fast I tried to swallow the air. Nothing worked. My hands gripped my throat as if there was some invisible release button. I tried to scream, but nothing came out. I felt like a horror movie on mute.
The room was pitch black and smelt of mildew. I had been laying on a mattress with no sheets. The temperature was cold enough to make my skin rise, but I had been sweating so hard that the air just felt sticky.
"Relax," A voice said in the darkness. My eyes widened until my brows started to get sore. I knew this voice. It was familiar in a way that should not be possible.
"Relax," I heard again. This time I could pin down the voice and it made my panic intensify.
It was me. It was my voice, but I wasn't the one talking.
A hand touched my shoulder and my entire body flinched.
"Shh, just breathe with me." My voice said taking a deep breath in and out.
My mind was traveling faster than a bullet train, but I did my best to calm down. After about five minutes I was able to settle my breathing, but I couldn't stop the shakiness that spread throughout my body.
"Okay, that's good, just like that," My voice said. "I-I don't know how to put this because I frankly don't understand."
My voice cracked and the hand on my shoulder squeezed tightly.
My lips quivered as I gently touched my neck.
"Yes, this is your voice."
The shaking got worse as barely pressed my fingertips to the bags underneath my eyes.
"An-and, your eyes."
Shock hit my chest so hard I thought my rib cage shattered. I shook my head vigorously as I slapped the hand on my shoulder away from me.
"I know what you're thinking, but I didn't do this too you!" My voice said defensively.
"Yesterday," My voice stopped for a beat. "Yesterday, I had throat cancer that was making its way to my brain. And today, I can speak for the first time in three years... I don't know who did this to us, but I promise you, we're going to get out of here. Do you trust me?"
Tears streaked down my face and I wondered how I was even able to produce them. I nodded.
"Good," My voice said with a confidence that I would never have used.
I stretched my arm out and a hand pulled me up. The mattress had been on the floor so it was easy to find my balance.
"I'm pretty sure we're in a basement so just hold onto me and when we reach the stairs, I'll say step and you'll lift your leg. You got that?"
I nodded.
"Good." My voice said pulling me forward. I only took two steps before panic held my feet down, like they were attached to cement blocks. My body was yanked, but I couldn't move. Having to put all my trust in a random person who wore my eyes and used my voice, suddenly felt very wrong.
"Come on," My voice said with an imperious tone. "We have to get out of here before someone comes down.
I was jutted forward, but pulled my arm back as soon as I caught my balance. My brows furrowed. How could this person know a whole day had gone by if we were in a basement. There are no windows in basements.
The grip on my hand loosened before squeezing onto my wrist twice as hard. "What's the matter with you? Don't you want to leave?" My voice said through gritted teeth.
Fear filled my veins as the hand attached to my voice started to drag me across the room. I used the feeling to keep me planted to the floor.
I thought hard as I struggled against my voice. What was I doing yesterday? Synapse sparked in my brain and the next thing I knew, my fist was colliding into someone's jaw. This wasn't real. None of it was.
The hand holding onto my wrist let go. I was still blind, but at least I was free. My stance changed as more memories flooded into my head.
"And here I thought, I'd have a little fun before I kill you," My voice clicked impatiently.
"I'd like to see you try." I said.

Hallo! I hope you liked this late night prompt! I chose not to give the voice a gender because I thought it would be cool to keep it ambiguous. In fact I tried to keep a lot of it ambiguous because I wanted to focus on the characters feelings in the moment. Also let me know what you guys think about the twist ;]. Fun Fact: There's enough water pressure in one onion cell to cause a steam engine to explode.
