"Drink of your..." Clover thought about how touching it made her see and experience a future. What would actually drinking the waters do?
"No. I can't. Thank you for your offer but that isn't going to happen."
"I could tell you what you need to know," it whined. "All you have to do is drink. Think about it. Every possibility, all paths, all open, all the time. Wouldn't that be freedom that anyone would crave for? Knowing everything that is to come? Acting on all the paths that could be?"
She thought about it for a bit. Then decided. "No. No thank you. I have enough of just dealing with the present. Just the one road the present offers. I don't need anything extra. Thank you though."
"Well, my offer is forever open, if you wish to partake," it said after sulking for a bit.
"Aha," Clover said not paying attention to it. She was counting the stones that she had left and busy thinking to herself.
I need more information. I could go back to the place where I first got to the girl but... it won't be there will it? The children I found they were all form several different dimensions, where would it be... informat- oh. Yeah."
"Well, you could just touch the waters again maybe..."
"Look, sir, ma'am, whatever, that's nice and all but I really must get going. And I know that whatever you are thinking will probably be trying to trick me into doing whatever you want. That's not what i need at the moment. So if you could just. Not. If you could just not. Now then, thank you for your hospitality and all but I must be on my way. I'm leaving now."
In an instant Clover was gone.
The thing sulked in the river for a little.
There was a loud thud on the forest floor as the boots of a man with red hair landed. He smiled an odd smile as he walked towards the river.
