"Pardon?" Roger implored, hoping that he didn't sound rude. He was in no condition to return to work, let alone start training a new hire that Kurt had found off the street. The wizard sighed, but his smile remained.
"You need to get back on the horse, Roger. It's time to put the past behind you and return to work. Sonya was an amazing agent, but she's gone now. She can never remember," Kurt reminded, his eyes full of regret. Roger stared at him, not sure if he felt angry or disappointed. Sonya didn't deserve what was done to her, but life was never fair.
"And you think the best thing is for me to take on an apprentice? I disagree wholeheartedly," Roger countered, standing from his seat. "I do not believe that I am capable of remaining professional during my grieving."
"Sonya isn't dead, and I think you two would make the perfect team. She doesn't understand what she can do yet, and you can show her the way. If not, it's only a matter of time before a lycanthrope catches on that she knows his secret," Kurt explained, watching Roger carefully. The wizard sighed, his glimmer faltering only slightly, not that Roger cared. He could see beyond the mask anyway. Kurt stood as well and stared at his employee head on. "If you do not agree, then I will have no choice but to take corrective action. Possibly even termination."
"Corrective action?" Roger inquired, pulled out of his emotional state for a moment.
"Yes, I think it would be appropriate to suspend you from your duties until you can learn that you have an important job to do," the wizard insisted, placing his hands behind his back. Lily continued to stare at his face, not sure what was going on.
"No one else here can do what I can do, aside from Miss Ambers here," Roger reminded, making the wizard grin darkly.
"Exactly, which is why I need to you pony up, so to speak. You need to take responsibility of you job and get going. You have to find those Rogues and bring them back here. Otherwise, you will be fired," Kurt warned as Roger frowned. Being fired from this job meant that he would forget everything and have a six year employment gap on his resume. At this point of time, finding a job would be near impossible. Not to mention that he would forget all the fond memories he had of Sonya.
"Fine, I'll train her," Roger answered, sitting back down. Kurt nodded, taking a seat as well. The wizard reached underneath his desk and pulled out a large stack of bound papers.
"Perfect. This is the on boarding packet. I'm sure you remember this particular monster, Roger. This has to be done by this time next week. In the meantime, Lily is going to be staying with you. I'll send someone over to refit your apartment with more accommodations for the spare bedroom," Kurt informed, pushing the large stack towards the new partners. Roger took it for Lily as Kurt stood, gesturing towards the door. Roger bowed, thanked Kurt for his time, and led Lily out of the office.
Roger handed the packet, if it could be called that, to Lily once they left the office. She looked terrified, but accepted the papers, hardly glancing over them. He looked at her for a few moments, tilting his head slightly to the left.
"Can you speak?" Roger asked as she stared at him.
"Yes," she whispered sheepishly. Roger sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He was relieved that she could speak, but she lacked confidence and drive, both required to do his job well.
"Do you have any questions? Because we're going to jump in and I know you need answers," Roger informed, starting to walk downstairs. Lily grabbed his arm and pulled back slightly, causing him to turn around. "What?"
"It's dangerous to go down there," she answered, her eyes wide with panic. Roger gently shook her off and took a deep breath.
"Okay, lesson one, I guess. The bar area is totally safe, and I know that you can see the werewolves and vampires. They're harmless here because this is a safe zone. This is where non humans can come and chill for a few hours and be themselves. Many keep their disguises on even in the bar, not that you would recognize that. Over time, you'll be able to see the glimmers and the truth, just as I do," Roger explained, staring intently at her. Lily looked even more unnerved, but nodded her head. "Okay, so now we have to go through the bar so we can get back home. And if you see anything unusual outside, you can't say anything about it. The people you see are trying to live normal lives, and we can't let them know that we know."
"Why?" Lily wondered, concerned.
"Because then it will get dangerous."
