Lily laid on the couch, flipping through channels, wondering what program she could tolerate at the moment. She had tried to sleep, but it was no use. Too much was going on, even though that she was exhausted. Eventually she landed on a shopping channel and she let it drown out her thoughts. It was short lasted as the apartment door swung open. Roger walked in, less drunk than Lily had anticipated. He was also home a lot sooner than she expected. She sat up as he walked across the room, visibly defeated.
"Roger?" she whispered, starting to stand when he passed her. He stopped and faced her, his eyes slightly puffy. He had been crying, there was no doubt about it. "Are you okay?"
"Of course. Did the delivery man not come yet?" he asked, immediately changing the subject. Lily only shook her head, knowing when not to pry. Roger sighed and looked down the hallway. "I'm sure they'll be here soon."
"I can stay up and wait for them. You look like you could use some sleep," Lily offered, wondering if she stepped too far with the second comment. However, Roger only nodded and continued back to his room. When he shut the door, Lily frowned. She had no idea what was bothering him, but she didn't think that they were close enough for him to confide in her. With a deep breath, she laid back on the couch and continued to flip through the channels.
Some time around one in the morning, Lily heard a knock at the door. She had fallen asleep to a home makeover show, and she sat right up. The delivery man was extremely late, but at least now she would have an actual bed to sleep on instead of a couch. She opened the door and several people came in without a word, bringing in different pieces of furniture.
"Thanks," Lily whispered as they walked past her and into the spare bedroom. They seemed to know their way around the apartment, which sparked some questions, but none that she was willing to ask. The delivery men worked quickly and had her bedroom put together in a matter of minutes. Soon, she had a bed, wardrobe, nightstand, desk, and a bookcase, all matching and complimenting the beige paint on the wall.
Once the furniture was finished, the delivery men filed out of the apartment and one left a note on the counter before leaving. Lily closed the door behind them and looked at the note. It looked like it was a receipt for delivery, proving that they had been there. She left the note on the counter and walked back into the spare bedroom. Well, her bedroom now.
However, while everything looked great, she noticed that she had nothing on her bed except a bare mattress. Lily groaned under her breath and went into the hallway. She looked in the closet to see if Roger kept spare linens, but to no avail. Holding onto hope, she walked back into her room to check the wardrobe. Again, no such luck.
Lily put her hands on her hips as she looked around. The delivery people definitely didn't bring in any linens to go with the bed, and she couldn't find any in the apartment. She definitely wasn't going to bother Roger for some sheets. She ran a hand through her hair, wondering if she should just sleep without any linens until she could get some the next day.
With a sigh, she walked back into the living room and took a blanket off the couch. She could sleep without a pillow or any sheets, but she wouldn't be able to without a blanket of some sort. She also grabbed her pack on the way back to her new room.
She dumped her pack out onto the bed and she looked at her belongings. She had a few shirts, two pairs of pants, some undergarments, a few bus ticket stubs, an old lighter, a pocket knife, and her box of red ginseng tea. She stared at the tea for a moment, remembering her grandmother, before placing the box on the nightstand.
After placing her clothes in the wardrobe and her tools in the nightstand drawer, she sat on the edge of the bed for a moment. She had scooped the stubs back into her pack and placed the pack beneath the desk. Lily had never owned a desk before, and she wasn't exactly sure what she was going to do with it. She thought of placing a computer there, but she couldn't afford one. Maybe once she got paid?
Right as she decided to try and sleep, there was a faint knock at her door. Lily got off the bed and opened the door to reveal Roger. He looked worse for wear, but it didn't look like he seemed to care. Lily looked at him with confusion, wondering why he was up well past two in the morning.
"They did a good job," Roger whispered, looking over her head. "I like the mahogany in here. I thought that Kurt would've forgotten the wall color. Do you like it?"
"It's great," Lily answered, still curious on why he was doing this now. "Did you come to talk about the furniture?"
There was a dreadfully long pause as Lily saw the gears turning in Roger's head. He was deciding on something, something that should have been decided before this, but he had been unprepared. At last, he sighed and spoke.
"I need some advice."
