Emmie’s eyes meet Alia’s and her hand covered her mouth. Tears started to pour down her cheeks as sobs racked her body. “I remember.”
Alia enveloped her in arms.
EPILOGUE
Robert Feor sat with a cup of coffee, reviewing his bank statements. He hoped he’d helped out his daughter a little bit. He felt remorse about not having reconnected with his daughter and granddaughter when he had the chance.
The case against Confundo Marks was successful with several girls coming forward with disturbing tales. The media had gone on a frenzy with the news of institutionalized assault against children. Politicians quickly added legislation to the Council’s approval and the SCPD was universally praised.
Although no one spoke of a formerly disgraced super and his non-super associate. Stu explained to Alia this was the way of things. Since he was the newbie, he didn’t expect anyone to notice. Alia found her peers at the med center had heard about it, and had congratulated her on her work. She shrugged it off, but noticed people did make an effort to talk to her which was nice.
Stu didn’t take Alia to work for a while as she was busy studying for exams and hanging out with her classmates. He was happy she was finally gaining acceptance after struggling so much. As he walked into their apartment he saw that she was skyping her mother.
The warm brown woman was amused with Alia’s anecdotes about the differences between Sky City and Charm City. He popped his head in and instruced himself. She laughed heartily and asked if she should be expecting grandkids soon.
Alia blushed. “Oh my god, mom. He’s my friend.”
“Well he’s your handsome friend and he just solved a big case.”
Stu reassured her he was taking good care of her daughter before excusing himself to take a phone call. He went to the terrace and shut the door behind him so Alia wouldn’t be able to hear. He put the receiver to his ear.
“Hi.”
“Hey, it’s Elina.”
“You’re the only one I know who calls me from weird numbers.”
“I’m sorry, this is my security guard’s phone.”
“Ok. I went to your apartment. And, I freaked out.”
“I know. I shouldn’t have called you. My dad wanted to move me and it was hectic. I was out of my mind and I took it out on you. I told my dad we’re not together. He didn’t take it well. Then he put me in a rehabilitation program and told me I have to go back to the hero program.”
“Ok.”
“I mean how do you feel about that?”
“I’m in a good place. I like work. I’m not going to follow you there. I know that’s what you want.”
“Ok. I’m hanging up now.”
