When we arrived back at the school I gave my club mates a quick see you at the dance and headed to Mushu’s room. When he opened the door he was already dressed in a black tux with a red vest and tie. His hair was cut short on the sides and spiked up all over the top which was left much longer. He had strips of red and gold in his hair that gave him a devilish look.
“Wow Mushu, you clean up nice.”
“Thanks. Your stuff is all laid out. I’ll see you there.” I stopped him before he could walk out.
“Where are you going?” He grinned at me.
“To pick up my date.” I smiled and nodded, letting him go. Wow, Mushu on a date, I was amazed. That girl must be really special to pull that boy out of his books. I closed the door before walking over to his bed. He did an amazing job. I put on everything Shu had laid out for me and fixed my hair. When I looked in the mirror I could finally recognize myself. I walked down the hall slowly. Trying to keep my breath slow and even. I’m so nervous. When I reached the ballroom doors I looked out over the sea of people and let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. I felt like I was frozen in place. I know this what I have to do, but can I? I was working up my nerve to walk down there when someone tapped me on the shoulder; I turned to find Chang looking down at me.
“You look beautiful.” The way he said it made my body heat up. I blushed and smiled at him. He looked me over. I put a red ribbon and a white lily in my hair, my eyes were smoky, my lips a pink cherry blossom. I wore a black halter dress that has a low cut v neckline. A pink silk fabric wrapped under my breasts and tied in the back and the last touch was the black strappy heels I had slipped on. I look like a woman. Chang slipped a flower onto my wrist and held my hand. I looked down at it, a bunch of pink cherry blossoms were gathered together with a green ribbon. When I looked back up at him he bent down and kissed me. His soft lips brushing mine. I took his arm and we descended down the stairs. The whole thing wasn’t that dramatic. People in the room didn’t stop to look up at us, but then again they weren’t the ones who mattered. Our friends stood off to the side all dressed up in tuxes, each of them putting their own unique touch to it. Hercules was the first to spot us, then John and the others.
“Wow, Chang you brought a hot date.” One of the guys said.
“Who is she?” someone else asked
“Hey has anyone seen Ping?” Another asked. That’s when Hercules spoke up.
“Ping? You’re a girl?” I blushed and nodded.
“Guy’s meet Mulan. You also know her as Ping.” I laughed at the guys. They were all stone-faced and it was just so funny. Their eyes went wide and their mouths hang open.
“You’re kidding? Our Ping? The guy can kick butt and joke around with us is a girl?” said one of the guys who recovered enough to ask.
“Yep. And just because I told all of you my secret doesn’t mean anything will change.” I looked over at Hercules, he looked down in the dumps. Over the past few months, we had gotten close as friends and now he looks hurt. I walked over to him and grabbed his hand.
“Come dance with me.” He didn’t answer but let me drag him out on the dance floor. He put his hand on my hip and I put mine on his shoulder. “You look upset.”
“How could I not be upset Ping. I mean Mulan. For months, I thought of you as my friend. A guy who I could talk to and be myself around and now you’re a girl. How am I supposed to feel about that?”
“Nothing’s changed, I’m still your friend. You are an amazing friend and I couldn’t ask for a better one. I really hope he can get used to thinking of me as a girl.
"May I cut in?” Chang stood right next to us and boy did he look mad. I smiled at him and Hercules laughed.
“Yeah, I guess you can have her for now.” Chang practically growled at him before pulling me into him. Herk laughed and walked away. Chang pulled me into a dance, holding me the way Hercules did but a whole lot closer.
“I think I preferred it when everyone thought you were a guy.”
“Why's that?”
“None of them hit on you then.”
