Exo opened his mouth which much sharper teeth. They almost reminded Kenny of shark teeth, only the teeth were there one second, and in the next gone. Just like that the teeth on the bottom row suck below the grey gums and the top row also disappeared.
The only thing left after that was the alien's weird fuchsia red tongue that appeared to have a ridge on it. "Wow," Kenny pushed his head back as far as it could go before it hit the wall. He has seen certain species of animals that can retract their teeth, but not all of them.
Exo went quiet, settling for glaring at the human now. Kenny looked up, meeting the amber eyes that did nothing to hide the alien's aggravation. He gave a small grin, not at all intimidated- if anything this encounter elated him. He knows about their kind more now. "Can you do it again?" Kenny reached up, moving a single finger near Exo's lips.
The alien stepped back, and despite only meeting the alien a day before, Kenny could tell that he had surprised him. Kenny sighed, his attempt denied and coldly rejected as Exo whipped around and went to the entrance of the room.
Kenny followed, assuming that Exo was just giving him the cold shoulder for being nosy. He had guessed right. The two walked quietly, with Kenny behind Exo, walking at a slower pace as he examined everything new thing they passed.
Every so often they would pass a wall that was almost entirely made of thin glass, and on the other side were multiple plants in a square space. The plants were nothing like Kenny has ever seen in his entire life. Perhaps in art, or in video games and comics, but these were real and unearthly.
There appeared to be three different types in each space. One was a dark purple vine that covered the walls but not the glass, and if you looked intently, it seemed to have pink glowing veins. The second plant was the largest, it had a wide and short stump that was a dark green, and on top of that a bright green bloom. The bloom was almost neon green and appeared to have purple tendrils that stuck up from it, slowly twirling in the air.
And to finish were small little clusters of leaves that waved from the ground. They were a popping yellow and were the first thing that caught Kenny's eyes. Leaves sprouting from the ground is anything but typical, and Kenny found himself entranced as he watched them move slightly.
"Eroq, frest, jon locae." Exo appeared beside Kenny. The alien pointed at the plants. Kenny suspected that Exo was telling him the names of the plant. Kenny pointed at them n the other side of the glass. He first pointed to the little yellow leaves sprouting from the ground. "Locah?" Exo shook his head. "Locae," Exo gestured to the purple vine. "Frest," He then pointed at the little yellow leaves. "Jon eroq," and he finally looked at the most significant plant specimen in the small space.
Kenny chuckled, realizing he just made some progress with Exo. At least they understood each other's gestures and actions a bit better now. Exo glanced over at Kenny, looking at him weirdly for merely chuckling. Kenny realized that Exo clearly didn't understand it was a chuckle.
"Sorry, lead the way." Kenny nodded his head, indicating that Exo continues. The alien understood that, turning to go back to quickly maneuvering around the hallways that were all practically carbon copies. Kenny decided to stop slowing Exo down by pausing at every little plant display; he could tell it was beginning to annoy Exo.
The pair arrived at the same glowing door that had led to the massive room from yesterday; where Kenny met their queen and spoke with Ollie. "Are we getting the translator tablets?" Kenny looked at Exo with hopeful eyes, already planning a shit ton of questions to ask the alien.
Exo didn't bother responding, merely waving his hand at the door to which it automatically opened. This time no guards were standing by, and the room wasn't crowded, but Kenny's breath still left him at the sight that was before him.
His entire crew was already in there, most of them stuck in weird clothes, and some were dressed akin to Kenny. The first person to see Kenny was Brooks, who gasped and ran towards Kenny. The man grinned and opened his arms, easily able to handle Brooks hugging him once she reached him.
Kenny had to bend down slightly to return the hug. He was not prepared for Kat to also launch herself at him. A grunt escaped him at the impact, and he was admittedly about to fall off his ass before someone supported him from behind. Kenny turned his head to see Gunner standing there, offering Kenny a small amused smile.
"Thanks," Kenny said with a laugh as Gunner helped him stand up straight again. Once he was stable, Kat and Brooks both backed off. "I'm so glad to see you," Brooks admitted, some emotion visibly in her voice. She has always been the mother of the group, worried about everyone.
"Bout time buddy, I was beginning to think you find gay alien porn and just holed yourself up in their weird freakish bathrooms." Kat grinned mischievously, joking around as usual. Kenny snorted, shaking his head. He looked behind Kat and Brooks to see the rest of the crew approaching.
Ollie stood beside Annabeth, and Benny was directly behind them. All in all, everyone looked fine. Kenny didn't see any bruises, marks, or anything of that sort. It was a relief. What increased that relief, were the multiple tablets that Ollie was holding onto.
"Bless," Kenny muttered as he rushed over to Ollie, eagerly picking up one of the tablets. He already knew the basic layout and configuration of the device and was easily able to set it up. "I am going to discover the secrets of the universe," he joked, glancing at Brooks who was just as excitedly setting up her tablet.
The others, well- they did not appear all that excited or eager. At all. Especially Kat, who just crossed her arms, refusing to pick up one of the tablets. "So, we were all assigned an alien, right?" Kenny looked up from the tablet as it downloaded, deciding to speak to his crewmates while he had the chance. "Yeah, even Gunner," Ollie answered Kenny, not looking up from their device.
Kenny's eyebrows went up at the answer. He could hardly believe the stubborn and strong headed Gunner was letting an alien lead him around. Or maybe it was just Exo who was like that? Either way, it was unanticipated. "Seriously? That's startling." Kenny's voice held a teasing tone as he turned to look at the crew's captain, but he immediately pulled up short when he saw Gunner's ashamed face.
"Hey, are you alright?" Kenny lowered his voice, not that he needed to since almost everyone was busy setting up their translator tablets. "I got stuck with that one." Gunner pointed over his shoulder, and Kenny curiously looked in the direction.
The young man grimaced at the view. This alien wasn't exactly intimidating; it just gave off this bad vibe. Its eyes were an eerie violet that matched its markings, but what crept Kenny out the most was the fact that it had no horns. All the aliens that he has encountered had horns.
"Geez," Kenny couldn't even think of anything to console his captain, so he decided to squeeze Gunner's shoulder in a sympathizing manner. "Maybe once we begin to figure things out, they will let us ditch the whole shadow thing and move into some quarters near each other?" Regrettably, that was all Kenny could think of to attempt to soothe Gunner's nerves.
Gunner released a sigh, pressing the palm of his hand against his right eye. "Thanks," the lack of gratitude in his voice didn't really seem all that appreciative, but Kenny doesn't exactly blame Gunner for it.
After one last remorseful look, and melancholy exchange, Kenny left Gunner to speak with Kat. The woman still had yet to even turn to her tablet, which Kenny assumed Ollie must have forced into her hands. "Angrily glaring at it won't turn it on," Kenny tried to calm some of Kat's evident aggravation.
"You're right," Kat mumbled, "I need to find a toilet to drop it on." Her glare intensified, sending an involuntary shiver down Kenny's back at the mere intensity of it. He cleared his throat, glancing away, only to catch the eyes of the queen who had been staring at him.
Though, now that he doubled checked, she had been staring at Kat to be precise. "Wait, were you assigned to the queen?" Kenny smirked, not able to hide his amusement. Just yesterday Kat had joked about seducing an alien queen, and evidently, that isn't happening.
"Boy, you better wipe that smirk off your face." Kat at long last looked up from the device, now turning her evil glare onto Kenny. Only, it doesn't work that much on him.
The man merely shrugged his shoulders in reply, still wearing an amused smirk on his face. "What is she like? Does she treat you kindly?" Despite her smug manner from earlier, he genuinely does care for Kat and will interfere if he finds out the queen is harming Kat.
Kat's glare dissolved, becoming an expression that showed she was lost in her thoughts. "Not really, honestly. Just weird. Kind of nosy, and touchy, but nothing too serious. I think I'm just homesick, Kens. I know its only been a day, but just knowing that a black hole destroyed our chances of returning- is really fucking horrifying now that I think more about it."
When Kat finished speaking, she slowly turned on the tablet. "We are alive though, when we could have died. I know our situation is grave, but at least we and the others that boarded the ship with us are all here, breathing and living." Kenny forced a smile on his face, staying strong for Kat.
Normally Kat is always the strong one, the one who doesn't show just how she feels on the inside, so on the rare occasion that she does; Kenny knows he needs to step up and be the strong one.
Luckily, his words seemed to have a positive effect on Kat. "Thanks, Kens, I needed that." Kat started up the process to get the tablet working. Kenny opened his mouth to respond but was cut short when the queen appeared before him. She didn't have to say anything; she simply had to stare Kenny down to make him back up and give her some privacy with Kat.
Once he was away from the two, he was approached by Exo. "You don't need a tablet also?" Exo was staring at Kenny's tablet, but Kenny saw that the alien held no tablet for himself. Exo shook his head, and he raised his hand to point at his neck.
"Ok then, I'll give it a try." The device is unproblematic once you learn how to use it properly. It was almost like he was creating a server, an open server for Exo to join with whatever technology he might have.
A few seconds passed before Kenny saw someone join the translator connection. "That you?" Kenny held out the tablet and pointed to the amber dot, which represented the person who had just entered the connection. Exo made some noise from the back of his throat, almost like a very abrupt whistle.
"Alrighty then, going to assume that's a yes." Kenny pressed on the line to begin his very first words that the alien should be able to understand. He started simple, and surprisingly enough, it wasn't a question. His first words were him telling Exo that his name is Kenny. He gazed up from the tablet, observing Exo's face as he waited for some form of an expression to appear.
Exo met the human's eyes, and grinned at him, "Hello, Kenny."
