After he had finished cleaning his horse Logan made his way back home.
"Logan, help us bring in the food please!" yelped Alicia from the kitchen. Alicia is the maid's daughter who helps around the house when ever she isn't at school. Only the children of noble families and traders can attend school so Logan and the other kids didn't go, but that didn't stop Miss Margarette from giving them a proper education since she was a teacher before starting the orphanage, 12 years ago after all foreign military officials were executed if they didn't leave the country. Despite his parents being foreign military officers Logan was not born in their homeland so he legally could not be sent back to whatever family lived there.
"Sure thing Alicia, what all do you need me to carry." Logan said changing into his slippers. Logan was always startled by Alicia's grey eyes, they reminded him of the sky before a summer storm. When Logan walked into the kitchen Miss Valery gestured to a large roast on the counter already cut.
"Okay I'll grab the roast what else do you want me to carry out?" he asked lifting the plate with ease.
"Mashed potatoes." Alicia said as she stirred the gravy.
"Okay I'll get right to it." he replied. Logan put the roast on the table when two sets of arms came out from under it to wrap around his legs.
"Not now boys I'm bringing out the food. Go get the biscuits from the pantry for lunch" he scolded. Logan headed back to the kitchen to retrieve the potatoes dragging the boys with him. The boys hopped up and grabbed biscuites from the pantry and ran to the dining room to dump them into a wooden bowl. Soon everyone was at the table ready for Logan's birthday lunch. They ate and passed over presents for Logan. Alicia gave him an amulet made from a bear claw to give him strength. Miss Valery gave him a charm to make anything edible so he can snack while he worked. The twin boys gave him a small dagger made from onyx which must of cost their whole allowance while Eliza got him a cross on a thick chain from a church that taught the religion from their homeland. Emilia and Angus two of the younger occupants of the orphanage made Logan a bracelet, Emilia braided the leather and Angus carved a lion out of wood for a charm to represent bravery. Marcus an older boy who arrived a few years ago, gave him a sword belt with a notch for his new dagger and a sword. Miss Margarette gave him a saddle with onyx and quartz decorations made with dark brown leather and white woven straps. Logan loved all his gifts and he made sure his family new it, he gave each of them a hug and a hearty thanks. After some of his favorite carrot cake with boiled icing everyone continued on with their chores for the day. A lazy boy called Lester threw a carved onyx in the shape of an eagle.
Most people in the country celebrated birthdays in the middle of the day so they have plenty of time to appreciate the life they were given by god and the gifts their loved ones gave them. Logan just had to help Marcus cut the firewood for the bonfire they would have to celebrate the beginning of the orphanage and his birthday. Soon after finishing his chore Logan was in the stables with Shadow, laying on a pile of hay reading a book to her about the history of his parents homeland and the dark deeds of its current Lord Darklyn. Miss Margaret never really talked much about his parents, only that they knew her father very well. Over the years he has read many books about their homeland including conspiracy stories about Lord Darklyn conspiring the assassination of the king and crown prince so he can rule unopposed until the princes young son came of age. The only members left were The young Kingling and the Dowager Queen who was getting on in years.
