Theory time: At this point, we can almost certainly rule out that Mr. Edburt is some kind of mental illness. He's probably some brand of demon that jumps from host to host. Judging by the line "you owe it all to me, Ada" he probably jumps hosts by providing some kind of favor or wish for the parent of the next host. Whether the parent is aware that they're offering their child, or even whether they agree to this deal at all has yet to be seen. Once contact has been established, he latches on to the new host, and preps them for total take over. Breaking their mind and will until he has complete and total control over their body. Once the host gets too old for his taste, he jumps ship for a new host. Of course, this is a very literal take. He could be metaphorical for something, but at this point I think the evidence is stacking for literal.
