The Pirates

Having a voice

Having a voice

Jun 22, 2018

Months have passed since I've begun to work on this ship and they still won't tell me. There are constant arguments about why I should know something and why I definitely don't need to know. Lowen and John are adamant to not allow me any knowledge of anything whereas Geoff keeps saying it is my right to know.

I'm not sure on where I stand. I want to know what happened to my parents I want answers but the looks on John and Lowens faces whenever the topics brought up is almost too painful for me to see.

The work I've been given to do is quite simple. I am to make disguises for the entire crew, which doesn't sound like hell but there are more people than I anticipated. I've hardly been able to eat with the amount of work, I'm always limited on resources as I myself am not allowed off the ship to go fetch what I need and these idiots are wanted all over the goddamn place. I only really get to have normal conversations with the horses who are used to being on the rocky boat though Lilly was still restless as she was continuously grouchy with any but myself, the crew couldn't get near her though that wasn't too unusual for her.

Geoff and John have kept their distance from me for a while but the growing hostility is easy to notice even among the dullest of the crew, I feel like I am more of a hindrance than a help, but I couldn't stay there in that village or on that island. Not any longer.

I had decided to try again to convince Geoff or John to allow me to gain my own resources because no one on this god damn boat seemed to be able to stay hidden enough to be able to. It's frustrating only twiddling my thumbs whilst the others risk their lives to get extra rations for me to eat, I'm pathetic. As I walked on deck I could tell there had been another argument as the deck was silent of banter and the crew were glaring my direction, I was, of course, been the cause of the arguments. Both Geoff and John were glowering at each other while Lowen looked slightly uncomfortable. I am so sick and tired of them arguing, I am sick and tired of becoming a problem, of the glares, and the snide comments.

"I have had it up to here with all this godforsaken arguing!" I yelled allowed, though it wasn't meant to be yelled so much as to be a whisper, well, I guess I had lost control by this point.

Now again, all eyes were on me.

"Eve, they keep saying you shouldn't be here and questioning my ways as captain you have to understand that won't stand, it never will." Geoff glowered towards John who snarled at him, Are they freaking wolves?

"Oh for heaven's sake! John, how many times do I have to tell you, It is my decision. keep your nose out. I can understand keeping whatever it is you are keeping about my parents from me go right a freaking head but please stop deciding things for me. let me live my life how I wish it. Even if that means leaving me in the hands of pirates. Teach me how to fight don't shove me behind you and get hit. I am not a child!" I spoke in a calm but clear and loud tone so that mostly everyone could hear. I walked towards the group again no ones eyes left us,

"But Eevee, it's dangerous and you could get killed," Lowen said petting my head in a brotherly manner once I was close to them,

"Then let me be killed," the words left my mouth more sinisterly than I had intended but my point was still pushed across.

"See, Told you this gal won't run from a fight," Max had popped his/her head in, smiling as if trying to disperse the tension,

"Also if I may can I yell something at the crew?" I asked almost timidly,

"Sure, I'll be damned if they listen to ya though," Geoff chuckled,

I turned to address the 50 men that were on the deck staring up at what was going on,

"Right you dumb asses, any of you have a problem with me and my eyes?! Because if you do then I would prefer you keep your stupid rumours and snide comments to say to my face and not behind my back you cowards!" I yelled forcefully at them, it had been a while since I'd raised my voice like that, I hadn't expected it to sound so threatening, but then again I'm sure they'd have just laughed at me if I had sounded like a mouse trembling in front of its predator.

There was a moment's silence before one tall gruesome looking man yelled up,

"You're creepy and you caused problems the moment you set foot on this vessel, and not yer telling us what to do! How dare ya have the audacity you wench,"

"At least I don't cower away from whatever chasing me, I'd prefer to get materials to hide your grusom horrendously defigured faces myself but no, your vice-captain thinks it best to hide me, and frankly I'm sick of you all staring at me, I don't stare at your deformities and scars, I don't call you horrid names behind your back, yet its okay for you lot to do it to me? because I'm different?" I said walked down into the crowd, I was petrified, but the only way to get through to these knuckleheads that I was not some damsel in distress was to face them front on,

"I have half a mind ta wack ya," The male growled,

"Go ahead, I dare you, I didn't grow up being brutally attacked and not learn how to defend myself against idiots twice my size, I promise you that," I glared at him,

There was another's moments silence before the crew erupted in laughter, I was confused for a moment before I was clasped into a one-armed hug, the gruesome man was hugging me, again confused and slightly terrified I quickly manoeuvred out of his grasp.

"Ah look, she's confused, poor lass thought ye was serious Drahgo." A smaller older man chuckled looking rather amused at my confused face.

"Ah, lass, I was just teasing ye seein if yer were all bark with no bite, seems ye have plenty o' bite ta be helpin' get yer material to hide out 'gruesome horrendously disfigured faces' " The tall man named Drahgo chuckled petting my head,

"Seems yer finally made friends with the crew, " Geoff said face stern as it usually was when with the crew,

"Well, I just yelled at them because they were irritating me with all the whispered and stupid rumours, I am extremely sick of rumours," I mumbled realising how much attention was on me now.

"well, ya seem to have really gained their respect lass," Geoff winked his icy blue eyes showing a form of mischief I hadn't noticed in them before.

After the ruckus of the morning, we found a place in port and I was allowed off the ship... in disguise as Drahgo's daughter, I wasn't sure if I enjoyed this idea but it was the only way for me to get off the ship without being questioned by the other pirate ships nearby. It's better than the first idea of being the mistress of the captain.

I was to accompanied everywhere by at least one member of the ship encase I attempted something stupid, and so once off the ship, I was stuck with Drahgo and Max, they wanted to go find weapons and more clothes for me and I wanted to get materials and leave. They won the argument, but only because if I attempted to argue back they shot the stupid rule of 'women should be seen and not heard' that was the thing that was wrong with this island, women were not allowed to argue back to the men.

I'm beginning to think that every island we come to will have something wrong with it, on my island it was full of corruption and hatred, this island was misogynistic and the next will probably be full of cannibals. Mumbling to myself complaining that I did not need new clothes as we walked I was not looking where I was going and obviously as most bad things that have happened to me lately I walked into a big brutish male falling to my backside as he stood over me. I won't say I wasn't scared, he was triple my size, and it was my fault for not looking where I was going, but when he demanded I apologize while I was still figuring out what happened I was slightly irritated.

I mean who on earth demands an apology when the one who bumped into them is obviously injured on the floor looking completely dazzled about what happened, I kept my mouth shut and looked up hiding my eyes. Pretending to be mute is my best bet. I began to get up only to be shoved back down by a rough hand.

"I told you to apologize woman, how useless are you that you havent even learned that yet," His growling voice sent a shiver down my spine.

I put my hands up they tremored slightly, I tried to mime the fact I was 'mute' to him only to hear a growl of rage,

"What are you signing woman, your not trying to cast a spell under that hood are you," his voice seemed slightly scared though most of it was masked by anger,

Max and Drahgo seemed to have finally caught onto the fact that I had disappeared as they walked and had rushed back apologising to the man,

"She won't apologize, she ain't getting up or leaving I don't give two shits about your apologies," The man growled,

"The problem here sir, is my daughter is mute, she is unable to speak, usually she is tied to my wrist so that this sort of thing does not happen, I apologise for her, that is what she was trying to say with her hands," Drahgo said lifting me off the ground, I felt so tiny amongst the large men I kept my head down beginning to shake trying my best to keep my temper down.

"Hmph, keep her on a tighter leash before someone less kind and forgiving bumps into her. " The man growled before he stormed off.

"you can't help but get yourself in trouble can you," Max sighed,

"Sorry," I replied bluntly, I want to go back to the ship. I don't like it here.

"C'mon the fabric shop is around this corner, watch where you are going this time," Drahgo's voice was strict but kind as he took my wrist to guide me,
