Without needing to worry about the cameras spying on them, Geordi and Scotty ran to the other side of the building, where there were two bay doors large enough to fit extra tall trucks. In between those doors was a normal human-sized door, and there was a flat tablet next to it. A red hand glowed on its screen, but it was wet from the rain. Scotty pulled out his own tablet from his pocket, and he connected it to the other device with a wire. After a few taps on his screen, the hand turned from red to green, and it beeped. There was a click in the door, and Scotty cracked it open, leaning his ear close to listen for the security androids.
"It's safe," Scotty said.
They slipped inside the building. Then, they each pulled out a flashlight from their backpacks, and they scanned the area. Three forklifts sat in one corner of the room, and there was a red light behind them to indicate they were not yet finished charging. Clear on the other side of the room, there were fifteen or more bins sitting on top of pallets, and they were overflowing with various things: monitors, TVs, stereos, robots, and so much more than that.
Geordi ran to the bin where hands were protruding from them. Robot arms, legs, and torsos rested inside the bin. The smell of various metals filled her nose, and she took a big whiff of it.
"I do love the way these things smell," Geordi said, poking Scotty in the side with her elbow.
Scotty chuckled, but he shook his head at her weirdness. He ran to another bin full of robot parts to help her find the parts they needed.
As Geordi picked through the pile, she found that most of the parts were encased in plastic, making them cheaper and lighter, but she needed parts encased in metal, like security units. They required twice the amount of coolant, but they were sturdier, allowing them to fair better in combat.
Eventually, Geordi found metal casing for one leg and for the shoulders in one bin, and when she moved onto the next, she found a plastic casing for a head. It was mostly intact with just the bottom jaw missing. The hooks that would control the artificial skin as it spoke were in perfect condition—better condition than she had seen in a long time. Although she had many heads at home that she had been planning to use, she shoved the head into her backpack.
"We should really start wrapping up our search," Scott said. "We only have about ten minutes left to get out of here."
Together they had been unable find the parts for a complete security unit, but Geordi knew how to piece together metal and plastic parts. The robot would be sturdier than most units, but most importantly, he would be strong enough to lift heavy things without issue. It was for that last thing that she had been looking for parts from combat units, anyway, and she did not plan to use him for actual security purposes.
The two of them took a moment to make sure the parts they had found would not fall out of their backpacks, but as they crouched on the floor with their flashlights in their mouths, they heard loud footsteps and mechanical whirring. Scott gasped, dropping his flashlight into his hands. He leaned toward Geordi's ear.
"That's one of the new combat androids," he whispered.
"It's right by the door," Geordi said.
"We don't have time to wait for it to leave. I mapped out another route that leads to the front."
"What if we run into another one?"
"As long as we avoid these things and make sure we leave before the cameras turn back on, we'll be fine."
Geordi wished she could share his optimism. There was a set of double doors. She stayed close to Scotty's side as they ran. Scotty plugged his device into the tablet beside the doors, and as soon as the red hand turned green, he opened the door and listened for more androids. When he was sure there was nothing they needed to avoid, Scotty motioned for Geordi to follow him.
