I open my eyes to see myself in my bed, “W-what?” I sit up. I turn my head and Arron was sitting next to my bed fast asleep. “W-Was that a dream?” I put my hand on my forehead, “It felt so real…” I whisper to myself, but loud enough that it made Arron shift. My bedroom’s door opens and Shiro walks in.
“Amberly! You’re awake!” He shouts, which wakes up Arron completely.
“Ace, what happened?” Arron sounds scared.
“I…uh…don’t know…” I rub my face, “But how did I get here?”
“Well, the woman at the restaurant was talking to you and next thing we know you fell to the ground.” Shiro says.
“Yea, And I had to carry you all the way here.” Arron scoffs, “You scared the hell out of me.”
“I-I’m sorry…” I feel so bad, but when that woman talked to me…it was like someone said that to me before..
“Well, I’m glad you’re alright, but you both need to get ready for school!” Shiro announces.
“Right.” Arron gets up from the chair, “Come on, Ace. We got a long day ahead of us…” Arron walks out. Shiro starts to head for the door.
“Dad…Wait…” I yell out.
Shiro turns around, “Yes Sweetheart.”
“I had seen a woman…She…told me ‘You’re alright, sweetheart. Everything is fine.’ And she was crying blood…” Just the thought freaks me out.
“Amberly, what did this woman looks like?” He sits beside me.
“Well, she had long brown hair…Like me…I didn’t see her eyes...her hair was covering them... and…”
“I’m going to stop you there…” Shiro smiles and kisses my forehead, “Don’t worry about it, just get through today, you got it?”
I nod at him and I smile, “Will do!”
I walk out of my room all dressed in my school uniform.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to give you guys a ride to school?!” Shiro asks in a winy way.
“Ugh, I told you we don’t need a ride, the school is like two blocks from here!” Arron grunts.
“By why won’t you let your father drive you?”
“You may have raised me, but I will not call you ‘father!’”
I laugh as I walk in the front room, “Dad, you go the other way for work, we will just make you late!” I smile at Shiro.
Shiro sighs, “Fine…” He smiles, “You look better!”
I nod, “Yea! I’m just ready for school! Arron and I have an important job! Don’t we?” I smirk at Arron.
Arron rolls his rolls, “Yea, yea, whatever” Arron signals me to come along, “Come on, Ace. We’re leaving.”
“Okay.” I walk pass Shiro, but he puts his hand on my shoulder.
“Just smile.” He whispers in my ear.
I laugh a little, “You got it, Dad!”
Arron and I walk out of the house. I walk a little behind Arron. I can’t get that woman out of my head. Who was she? I have a really itchy feeling that Shiro knows who she is. But how?
“So Ace, I’m pretty sure you told Shiro about what happened. Mind telling me.” He looks back at me.
I tilt my head down, “It was just a very bad dream…”
“Bad dream.” Arron chuckles, “So I’m guessing it’s not about the day you got saved from your boyfriend.”
“What did I say about that?” I sigh. “I really don’t want to talk about it.”
“You know, you try so hard to help me, but you never let me in. So in a way you’re acting like me. How do you expect to help me when you don’t let anyone in so you can get help? That really cancels each other out.”
Wow, his brutality kicks in again. Is that why I’m hooked to him? He never once sugar-coding anything and I just hate when he says things like that, and yet I need his brute…
“I’m sorry, but it’s just the cold, hard truth.”
“Arron…”
“We’re here.” He looks at me. “You get to class and I’ll patrol the halls while you get done with your first class, got it?”
“Yea, But only if you don’t go and hurt anyone in the process.”
“I’ll do what I must to keep the vampires from hurting the other students.” Arron scuffs.
“Arron!”
“Fine, fine, I’ll try” Arron walks away before I can say anything else.
I shake my head left and right, he does that all the time. I look at the building. I remember the first day I walked in here.
“You ready for your first day in high school, Amberly?” Shiro asked me.
I nodded, “Doesn’t Arron go here?”
Shiro laughed, “Yep, He’s going to be happy to see you going to this school now.”
We walked into the school into the principal’s office.
“Mr. Franklin!” Shiro shouted in glee, “It’s her time now!”
The man, looked at me, “Well, Ms. Jones, welcome to Crosshill high School, for humans and vampires alike.
I smiled, “I’m very excited to be going to this school!”
The man laughed, “You are a lot like your father, always excited. Arron wasn’t excited when Shiro enrolled him.”
The door swung opened, “I forbid it!” a familiar voice said.
“Speaking of Arron, come, sit.” Principal Franklin said, motioning him.
I turned around in the chair. Arron looked furious.
Arron came up to me, “She can’t go to this school!”
“And why not, Arron?” Shiro asked in a playful way.
“Ace and I don’t go to the same classes, if a vampire thinks she’s a good snack, I won’t be able to help her. She doesn’t know what goes on in this school.” Arron yelled, he really didn’t like the fact I even stepped foot in this school.
“First off, that won’t happen, and second I have an idea where you can keep an eye on her during her time here.” Mr. Franklin opened a drawer near his desk. I heard him shuffle things in it.
“Oh really and how so?” Arron crosses his arms.
“You still have that gun from your parents?”
“Y-yea…what’s that have to do with anything?”
Mr. Franklin handed me what looked like a rod. In the middle of the rod was a silver button. I pressed it. The rod extended on both sides, the bottom side almost hit Arron’s foot, which would have really hurt. I pressed it again then it unextend right back from what I had it before, “Um…What’s this for exactly?”
“From this day toward, you and Arron will be on the disciplinary committee!” Mr. Franklin smiled big. I looked at Arron in wonder, hoping he could fill me in.
“Um…What?” Arron yelled.
“It’s your guys’ job to keep humans and vampire, in this school, in line. And besides you said you don’t want her to be in this school because you won’t be able to stay with her. So with this, you guys can leave your classes at any time to patrol the halls or to even keep an eye on each other.”
“But…why us…If I can ask that.” I asked in a soft voice.
“Ahh, good question, Ms. Jones. I picked you two because you both have experience with vampires. Arron has a bad past with vampires, where you have a good past with vampires, but you also had a little bit of what a vampire can become especially a human turned to a vampire. I know Arron will keep them in line, and you will help them, but you will do what you need to if gets out of hand.”
“That makes sense.” I replied.
“If you mean sense on another planet!” Arron yelled. “You all are crazy to even allow vampires in a school, if anything, they should all be dead!”
“You do so well here, Arron, maybe this will help you see a different light in vampires. This is a very good idea, Mr. Franklin.” Shiro seemed so happy about this.
Mr. Franklin smiled, “You want to protect Amberly, well this how you will be able to do so.”
Arron sighed, “Fine, but don’t expect me to ‘warm up’ to vampires!”
