Classes ended short before the trio of skaters turned back to Heisen facilities. The building was built from the ruins of an old fabric and took two years to be completed, from April 2033 until late August 2035. The founder and president was Rudolf Heisenberg, ex police chief of the Police Department of Berlin. He considered the rose of humans able to use otherworldly powers as a chance and a threat: chance for further development of society and threat, as some people would use such power for evil purposes. For that reason, he decided to take the lead in a project to gather and train those who possessed those abilities to defend the people from those who would cause harm, also helping them to know and control better those new abilities. For that reason, the wide square-shape building was divided in five Departments: Research and Tech Development Department, Special Defense Department, Educational Department, Medical Department and finally the Administrative Department. The project was successfully attained thanks to the brilliant coordination of its president and the collaboration with the local govern, even after all the aftermaths due to the end of WW III. After the third Great War, many countries affronted many hardships, and the rise of these ‘super humans’ made things even harder. Many countries, starting with the United States of America, Japan and China, followed the steps of the Germans and founded similar facilities, some of those still incomplete to this day.
After completing their duty giving an oral report of the facts to Miss Wittich, Erik and his friends rushed outside the Special Defense Department (SDD), took their stuff they left before from the classroom and went outside to have some fun. As they usually do, they went to the skate park on Mellener Street, a place Erik frequented for a long time, and introduced to his friends of Heisen some weeks after they met. Every time Erik entered the place, many other skaters greeted him and his friends. Even before becoming a kind of celebrity for being part of the police force, he was very popular in the place, one of the best skaters of all Berlin. Even so, Erik, Stephan and Samuel were treated like anybody else, since they didn’t like the whole ‘celebrity’ thing. This made other people felt less awkward towards them, allowing the three to have a place in which they could be themselves in peace. Many times reporters and many other curious tried to approach the group of Heisen in their free time at the skate park. Those times, the other skaters pushed away the media out of the place. After all, they didn’t want to be annoyed by ‘outsiders’.
Like usual, Erik, Stephan and Samuel enjoyed their free time, not caring about homework or world peace. Those were their precious moments in which they could be just normal kids like anybody else.
A new day started, the sun rising in the sky over the busy and renewed Berlin. During the war, the city was relatively kept safe from the chaos, even if armed conflict rose in the city many times. The city grew to gather many of those moved from their cities due to the vast destruction, and many German cities are still under reconstruction. The demographic increase of the city was a huge problem the first days after the war officially ended, but thanks to the spirit of collaboration and teamwork that characterizes this nation, they recovered relatively quicker than many other countries. Thanks to this and the relatively less damage taken, Germany became a strong point of reference for all Europe and the rest of the world. The United States of America lost its long supremacy due to the consequences of war, but not only because of that. The ‘Divine Judgment Day’, the day in which flaming meteorites came down on Earth, destroying entire cities around the world. This dreadful day marked the end of the third World War. The USA lost almost the seventy percent of its territory, some islands of the Pacific Ocean ceased to exist, Africa became a ‘moving continent’, as it was detached from the Asian continent. Also, the middle east conflict in Israel was stopped, for good or for evil, as the ‘sacred land’ became the new Atlantis, lost forever under the deep sea. Nations of the world ceased their mutual conflicts, as many reasons of their conflicts simply disappeared from the face of Earth. Instead, they started a course of renovation, reconstruction on their own. Some of them took a course of collaboration, others seemed to see this as a chance to take even more control over the world. Then, ‘super humans’ appeared. The meteors brought to Earth a new kind of unknown mineral, which stored an unknown energy source. Energy source that many identified as the next source of energy for further development of human society. Energy, that somehow ‘melt’ with the human etheric body, giving them abilities that before were just a wild dream. So, if the ‘Divine Judgment’ brought chaos and destruction, it also brought hope, a possibility to start to create a better world. However, as human history showed us, these new possibilities and resources were used both for good and for evil. That was the reason Heisen was founded: to perform further research on the properties of Dunkel and Licht energies, and protect citizens from those who would choose their abilities for evil.
Once again, the history teacher reassumed in one long session the most important chapter of the modern era to the young and annoyed students at Heisen. As teenagers, their thoughts were towards many other things, listening to the current lesson with not that much interest. After about two hours of enduring, the bell rang, marking the break time all the students were waiting for.
- Remember to study well all this, since it will be present in your next test. Also, remember to study the documentation I gave you regarding the organization of this Institute, as it will be part of an oral test very soon – advised Ms. Landauer, an old teacher whose expression was always somehow stern.
Before rushing outside the classroom, the class was visited by the secretary of the Administrative Department, Charlotte Biel. After asking for Samuel, she allowed the others to go. And so they did, besides Erik, whose curiosity made him stay with his friend.
- Is it everything ok? – asked Erik, worried his friend could have any problems with the administration.
- Oh, Mr. Rivolta, good morning – greeted the always well-mannered Miss Biel – Nothing of the sort. I just wanted to ask Mr. Keller to make me a favor. Nothing less.
- Of course, what is it? – asked Samuel to the secretary.
- We have a new kid on the facilities. He is now finishing the check-in at the Medical Department under the care of Doctor Rehn, so I would like Mr. Keller to pick him up and then guide him through our institute.
- Let it to me, then! – agreed Sam with enthusiasm – So, where should I go exactly?
- You will find him in ten minutes in the waiting room at the Medical Section, first floor.
- Oh, I’m coming with you! – Erik said, enthusiast to meet a new classmate – I’d like to meet another ‘newbie’ like me! If that’s ok, of course.
- I see no problem on that – assured Ms. Biel – Then, please go for him before your break time ends. I’d like him to take part on the afternoon lessons to fully integrate as soon as possible.
That said, Ms. Biel leave the classroom returning to her other hundreds of tasks. Samuel and Erik then went towards the Medical Section, under the building belonging to the Medical Department. “I wonder what kind of student has arrived!”, thought Erik aloud. “I bet he’s just another weirdo like us, haha!”, joked Samuel.
