I am nervous when Heather and I start our journey into the forest. We don’t know what is in the forest and what we will come across whilst in there. During the beginning of our trip, we walk in mostly silence as there really isn’t anything of interest or anything to talk about. The scenery is nearly the same with the trees acting as a cover from the sun.
“Hey, look at the tree over there!”
I look to where Heather is pointing and see that there is a tree ripe with fruit. The tree is different from the other trees as it has light brown bark instead of having an orange tint like the rest of them. The fruit looks like an orange. As we arrive to closer inspect the tree, I pick one of the fruit and try to peel the outer layer.
“Odd, the peel doesn’t want to come off.”
I keep trying to peel the orange until my hands start to get sore. I start trying to peel it again to no avail. This process keeps going until I get so angry that I throw the fruit on the ground.
“Stupid orange...”
I pick another one from the tree and try to use my pocket knife to peel it. I am able to cut the orange this time. I expected when I cut the orange that some of the fluids inside would come out, but instead I am greeted with an interior that looks more like an apple or a pear. It even has seeds where an apple would.
“Hey Heather, come take a look at this.”
She comes over and I show her the fruit and it’s interior. She looks as bewildered as I am.
“Is this even an orange? It looks more like an apple.”
“Do you want to taste it?”
“Are you sure it’s safe?”
“Probably… let’s just taste it at the same time then okay?”
Heather nods her head in agreement. I then cut this strange fruit into small pieces and give a part of it to her. I hold the rest of the fruit in my hands, trying to not let them fall on the ground.
“You ready?”
Heather nods.
“Okay then, on three. One… two… three!”
We both take a bite out of the fruit. Chewing, I notice that it has a tart taste to it. I kind of expected to immediately spit it out in disgust. I am glad that my expectations were wrong though, as I enjoy the fruit.
“This is good Cameron! What do you think?”
“It’s good, sort of tart don’t you think?”
“Yeah!”
We eat the rest of the fruit and continue into the forest. Over time we see other trees with the same fruit, slowly becoming more and more regular until it is the dominant tree of the area. It is amazing to take in all the sights. But one thing bothers me, where are all the animals?
“Heather, don’t you think it strange that there are no animals? Like, we haven’t even come across a single bird or small creature.”
“Yeah, that been kinda bothering me as well. Even with all the trees with fruit, there isn’t anything.”
We continue walking, waiting for something bad to happen to us. This has to be the weirdest forest ever. Getting bored with the same sights, I look up. As I look up, an odd blotch in the sky catches my eye. Squinting, I try to make out what it is.
“Hey Heather, look up, do you see that dark figure as well?”
She looks up and squints as well.
“Yeah, I see it. What about it?”
“Is it just me or is it moving?”
The blotch looks like it’s moving like it’s a bird. I take out my phone to take a picture of it. Holding my phone, I go into the camera app and look at the screen.
“It’s a bird! That’s a bird Heather!”
I take a picture and show it to Heather. Looking at the picture, she becomes confused.
“Wait, does that bird have two sets of wings?”
What? I look at the screen with the photo of the bird. Indeed, as she said, the bird has two sets of wings. I have never heard of a bird that has two sets of wings, though I wouldn’t know as I’m not an animal fanatic.
“Hey Cameron, are we even on Earth anymore?”
