Mackenzie's eyes fluttered open moments before her alarm clock shrieked to awake her.
The sun brightly shone through the gap in her curtains, lighting up the room with an orange glow.
The cost bed covers were pulled to Mackenzie's chin as she thought about what could possibly happen today. Of course Grace would be telling her about how much she hates Isaac, but she could deal with that. The thoughts Grace had weren't real. Thomas distorted Graces memories to believe that Isaac was a bad person, when the only bad persons was Thomas.
She got out of bed and got ready for school, going downstairs to see her father.
"That attack last night needs to be investigated. We can start by asking the staff at the restaurant." Mackenzie heard a voice saying from the kitchen.
Mackenzie remembered how Thomas deceived the waitress to meet him after her shift. He must have fed on her. The idea of her murdering that women made her sick to the stomach. She didn't deserve to die.
The two voices continued to talk in a hushed tone so that only they could hear what was being said. Mackenzie pushed the kitchen door open to see her father talking to his friend Liam.
Liam and Jason had been best friends since they were kids. He was the friend that went with Jason to have the spell put on Mackenzie's necklace.
Mackenzie never liked Liam very much. Liam had tanned skin and brown eyes with very dark brown, almost black hair. His teeth were pearly white and he had all the girls falling at his feet. However, he didn't have a girlfriend. He had the looks, but not the personality. He loved himself and would spend hours if he could, staring at himself in the mirror.
Liam and Jason looked up from their conversation as Mackenzie walked into the kitchen.
"Morning Kenzie." Jason cheerfully sang.
Jason was always just that little bit happier when Liam was around. Mackenzie was happy to see her father like this, she just hated that it was Liam that made him feel that way.
"Morning Dad." She smiled, making some coffee.
She turned around to look at Liam who was sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for Mackenzie to say something to him. She looked Liam up and down, then turned back to her father.
"Isaacs coming over after school so I can help him catch up with work." Mackenzie said.
"And Isaac is?..." Jason asked, earning a scoff from Liam.
Mackenzie glared at Liam as he smirked at Mackenzie.
"It's the new boy I was telling you about." She answered Jason.
Jason reached into his wallet and pulled out some money, handing it to Mackenzie.
"No going up to your room. Stay in the kitchen or living room." Jason firmly said. "Liam and I are going out for some pints tonight, get yourself and Isaac some pizza." He smiled.
"Thanks dad." She answered, putting the money in her pocket. "I better get going. I'll see you tonight." Mackenzie said, leaving the kitchen.
She usually would have stayed longer but this morning, she didn't feel like being in Liam's presence any longer than she needed to. She grabbed her car keys and school bag, then went out to her car. It was Mackenzie's turn to drive Grace to school.
It wasn't very often that Liam visited Jason, but when he did, Mackenzie barely saw her father. If Jason wasn't working, he would be out with Liam at a bar. All she could do was hope that Liam's visit wasn't as long as the last time. A year ago, he spent almost a month living at their home. If she stayed as long this time, she would go crazy!
She took off towards Graces house. Grace knew all about Mackenzie's hatred for Liam. In fact, she even offered to let Mackenzie live with her when Liam came over the last time.
Grace skipped out of her house, throwing her school bag into the back of Mackenzie's car, then got in to the passenger side.
"Hello Mackenzie." She sang.
"Morning Grace." Mackenzie replied, taking off towards school.
The roads were busy with traffic. Horns were honking every so often and men and women of all ages walked down the pavements were dressed in their appropriate uniforms, ready for the day ahead. Mackenzie stopped as the lights turned red, her eyes watching the pedestrians walking across the road.
"Isn't Thomas so nice?" Grace suddenly said.
Mackenzie looked over at her friend in annoyance. Thomas was the last person she would call nice.
"No." Mackenzie bluntly answered.
Grace looked at Mackenzie in shock. She didn't think that Mackenzie would disagree with her. She sat back in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Well I don't know how you can stand Isaac." Grace huffed.
Mackenzie rolled her eyes as the traffic lights turned green again. She took off towards school. The car was quiet. All that could be heard was the engine and Graces huffs of anger every so often.
How was she ever going to get Grace to like Isaac again?
"Isaac is kind, Thomas isn't. I just wish there was some way that I could show you that." Mackenzie said, pulling in through the school gates.
She drove into a parking space and seconds later, Isaac pulled up next to her. She eagerly waved over at Isaac as they all got out of their cars.
"I'm going." Grace said, storming off into school.
Mackenzie locked her car and met Isaac around at his car.
"She really hates me." Isaac sighed.
"We'll figure out how to undo the deception." Mackenzie optimistically said.
The two slowly made their way in to school together.
"Are you still coming over to my house after school?" Mackenzie asked.
Isaac smiled as he nodded. He was just as excited to spend time with Mackenzie as Mackenzie was.
The corridors were swarmed with students filling the school with loud chatter.
There was only weeks left of school before the summer holidays and Mackenzie's exams were fast approaching.
Mackenzie and Isaac made their way towards the stairs when Trinity spotted them, quickly walking towards Isaac. She stood uncomfortably close to Isaac making him look at Mackenzie as if to say 'is she for real?!'
"Hello Isaac, my name is Trinity." Trinity smiled, flicking her long hair over her shoulder. "We have history together." She continued, giving him a toothy smile.
Isaac smiled at the stranger and stepped back, creating a gap between himself and Trinity.
"It's nice to meet you Trinity." Isaac politely answered.
Trinity glanced down at Mackenzie and gave her a dirty look.
"I hope she's not giving you any trouble." Trinity spat, looking Mackenzie up and down. "She can be quite a nuisance. I'm sure I could be much better company." She smiled, looking back at Isaac.
Isaac furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at Trinity in disgust. How could someone speak about anyone the way she did? Especially in front of that person!
Mackenzie could feel her cheeks burning from embarrassment. She knew that Trinity was nasty but she didn't think that she would try to humiliate her just to get a boy.
" 'she' has a name. Mackenzie has been nothing but kind to met since I've came here, so no I would not like your company." Isaac said, standing up for Mackenzie.
A gasp left Trinity's mouth as she looked around her to make sure that no one was listening. No one had ever stood up to Trinity before and a boy definitely has never turned her down before. Trinity was used to getting any boy she wanted. It was like she did a spell to make them all worship her.
A hand grabbed Mackenzie's and she looked down as Isaac dragged her past Trinity, up the stairs.
"Thanks." Mackenzie smiled, as the bell rung for registration.
They made their way into the classroom and sat down at their usual seats. Grace kept her head low, not wanting to make conversation with Isaac.
"Is she always like that? That Trinity girl?" Isaac asked.
"Yeah." Mackenzie chuckled.
Isaac shook his head. He couldn't understand why Trinity would treat Mackenzie the way she does. However, he wasn't going to let that ruin his day. Today would be good.
*
Cars quickly sped out of the car park as the bell rung, indicating that it was three o'clock. Mackenzie sat in her car with Grace, waiting for Isaac to come out of class so that he could follow her in his car.
He gave Mackenzie a wave as he approached his car and she smiled, waving back. She rolled down her window to talk to him.
"Just follow behind me." She instructed.
Isaac nodded his head, climbing into his car.
Mackenzie took off to Graces house first. The car was quiet as tension filled the air. Grace was angry.
"I can't believe you chose to hang out with Isaac over me." Grace said, playing with a loose thread on her t-shirt.
Grace was beginning to irritate Mackenzie. She did nothing but complain all day about how Isaac was taking Freddies place in their friendship group. Mackenzie knew that this wasn't Graces fault, but it was still getting on her nerves.
"I didn't choose him over you. I'm only helping him." Mackenzie said, pulling up at Graces house.
Grace ignored Mackenzie, grabbing her schoolbag and leaving the car.
"Thanks for the lift." She said, closing the car door before Mackenzie could say anything more.
The solution to Graces problem was very unclear. How was Mackenzie going to get Thomas to take away the deception? It had only been a day since the incident occurred yet Mackenzie was already getting annoyed at Graces persistent complaining about Isaac. At this rate, she would have to choose between Grace and Isaac.
She pulled up in her driveway and Isaac pulled up at the pavement in front of her house. Isaac followed Mackenzie into her home and they went to the kitchen. Isaac sat at the dinner table while Mackenzie gabbed glasses from the cupboard.
"Can I get you anything to drink?" Mackenzie asked.
"Ah..." Isaac froze. He wasn't sure why that question made him feel uncomfortable. Maybe because he hadn't satisfied his cravings since this morning. "No thank you." He finally answered.
Mackenzie filled up a glass of water for herself and sat across from Isaac. She had never felt so nervous in her life. She was afraid she would say the wrong thing and make a fool of herself in front of him.
"So what do you want to start with?" She calmly asked, unzipping her school bag.
Isaac pulled out his almost empty history folder.
"History will take the longest so let's start with it first." He said.
For an hour, Isaac allowed Mackenzie to teach him everything he already knew. Every so often she would get something wrong, causing her to get flustered and make Isaac chuckle. Mackenzie hadn't felt this happy since Freddie was murdered. She felt so refreshed. Like a completely different person.
She closed over her history books and let out a sigh and she smiled at Isaac.
"I think we should take a break." She chuckled.
Isaac nodded in agreement, getting up from his chair.
"Could I use your bathroom?" Isaac politely asked.
"Yes it's just upstairs and the first door on the right." Mackenzie explained.
As Isaac left to go to the bathroom, Mackenzie's phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text from Evie.
Evie
Hey! Do you wanna get coffee after school tomorrow?
Mackenzie
Of course! Where do you wanna go?
Evie
Let's go to Mason's. Meet me there by 3:30
Mackenzie
Okay, see you then!
Mackenzie smiled down at her phone. She was excited about spending time with Evie. It had been a while since she got to talk with Evie and maybe she would be able to have a proper conversation about Isaac without having a comment every five minutes about how much she hated him.
