Church street was quiet. The only sounds that could be heard was the chirping of birds and Mackenzies car, slowly driving down the road as she looked for Evie. She pulled over, parking at the side of the road and got out.
As she walked along the pavement, she could hear sniffling. It was Evie.
She was sat on the kerb between two parked cars with her face hidden by one hand and the other pressed against her neck. Fresh blood poured over her hand as she held it tight to her skin.
"Hey." Mackenzie said, as she got closer to Evie.
Evie looked up and burst into tears when she seen Mackenzie. She stood up with hand still pressed to her neck so that Mackenzie couldn't see the wound.
"He cut my neck." Evie sobbed.
Mackenzie's stomach dropped. This had to be Thomas....or maybe even Isaac. But it couldn't be Isaac. Could it?Mackenzie argued with her thoughts.
"Let me see the cut." Mackenzie said, gently pulling Evie's hand away from her neck.
Gently, Evie took her hand away from her neck. It was covered in blood but there was no sign of a cut. It had already healed. Mackenzie's heart began to race. This can't be happening. Mackenzie stepped back from Evie as she bit her lip. What was she going to do?!
"Is it bad?" Evie asked as she seen the panic in Mackenzie's eyes.
Mackenzie shook her head moving away from the topic of Evie's 'cut'
"What did the man look like?" Mackenzie asked.
If Thomas or Isaac's description was given, Mackenzie knew that she wouldn't be able to help Evie. She didn't know the first thing about vampires, especially ones that were new! She braces herself, ready to listen to Evie's description.
"He had black hair, green eyes and he had this weird scar on his cheek. It was in the shape of a line with a circle in the middle of the line." Evie explained. Looking around to see I anyone was watching them. "He asked me for directions and just as I started to tell him, he stabbed my neck and took my things."
That description didn't fit Thomas or Isaac. There was another vampire in town. Mackenzie looked down at the ground to where Evie's handbag sat.
"Is that your things?" She asked, pointing at Evie's bag.
Evie turned around and she sighed in relief.
"My handbag!" She exclaimed, picking it up from the ground. "But I saw him carry it away. I know I did."
Whoever that vampire was had deceived Evie to forget that she was bitten. But who was it?
"Okay, I know someone that can help you." Mackenzie said taking out her phone.
She walked away from Evie as she scrolled down her contacts list to Isaac and rung him, holding her phone to her ear. The call rung twice, then Isaac picked up.
"Hello?" He answered.
"Hey Isaac. Something bad has happened. I need your help." Mackenzie felt horrible asking Isaac for help after what she said earlier but she had no choice.
"Sure, come on over." Isaac said.
"Thanks, I'll see you in a bit." Mackenzie said, hanging up the phone.
A look of fear spread across Evie's face as Mackenzie turned back around to get Evie.
"H..how did I hear Isaac on the other end of the phone? Did you have it on loud speaker?" Evie asked as Mackenzie guided her towards her car.
Not a word left Mackenzie's lips. She didn't know how to answer Evie. She wasn't even sure if she was the right person to tell her what she was becoming!
As Mackenzie sped off towards Isaacs house, Evie's skin had turned pale and dark circles had formed under her eyes. At the corner of her eye, Mackenzie could see Evie itching her throat every few minutes.
"My throat is burning." Evie complained, itching at her throat again.
A shaky breath left Mackenzie's mouth as she grew more nervous. This was really happening.
Evie then pressed her hands to her ears. She quickly turned the radio off, sighing in relief.
"I'm so hungry, we need to stop for food." Evie groaned.
"I'll get you food in a second, just hang in there." Mackenzie said.
Mackenzie was terrified. At any moment, Evie could turn around and kill her.
Her grip around the steering wheel tightened, making her knuckles turn white. She had to stay calm for Evie's sake.
"Why is your heart beating so loud Mackenzie. Are you okay?" Evie panicked.
"I'm fine." Mackenzie said, trying to sound as calm as possible.
She pulled up into a large driveway and helped Evie out of the car.
Isaac's house was beautiful. He had told her that he moved into the large house that had been up for sale for a few months when they hung out yesterday. Luckily, there had only been a few house up for sale within the past few months and Isaac's house was the only big house that was for sale.
The house was beautiful. It had large red bricks and a big light brown door at the top of the steps. Mackenzie noticed that the windows were quite small, probably because of the whole vampire thing and sunlight. But that didn't explain how Thomas or Isaac was able to walk in the daylight. The garden was well kept with bushes and flowers dotted around the garden.
Both Mackenzie and Evie hurried to the front door and Mackenzie knocked on the huge brown door.
The door opened, revealing Isaac.
"Mackenzie, what's wrong?" He asked as his eyes slowly looked at Evie.
Her eyes had began to slowly turn red. They almost looked bloodshot. Her breathing had become heavy and she gritted her teeth as she began to crave the blood that ran through Mackenzie's veins. She had her arm slouched over Mackenzie's shoulder to keep her balance. Her head was spinning from her cravings.
"Bring her inside." Isaac said, also helping to bring Evie in.
They brought Evie to a large dark grey sofa, that sat in front of a blazing fire. The living room was beautiful. There was a window, that looked out into the back of the garden. A small coffee table sat with pretty flowers in a vase in front of the sofa and there was a book case filled with very old looking books. Two light grey armchairs sat at either side of the fireplace with white cushion sat upon them.
"Stay here." Isaac said as he quickly left at Vampire speed.
Within seconds, he had returned with a bag of blood.
"Drink this." He demanded, handing the bag to Evie.
"I'm not drinking that!" Evie exclaimed.
Isaac sighed at her stubbornness.
"At least have a smell of it." He encourage her.
Evie sniffed the blood, making her eyes turn a deep red. Fangs grew from her upper jaw and she drank the blood as fast as she possibly could.
"I'll go get her more." Isaac chuckled.
He returned with 4 more bags of blood, setting them on the sofa next to her.
Mackenzie sat down on one of the armchairs as she watched Evie drink the blood like here was no tomorrow.
"Who turned her?" Isaac asked.
"I'm not sure. She said it was a guy with black hair and a scar on his face?" Mackenzie explained.
Isaac furrowed his eyebrows and stood in silence as he thought. He didn't know any vampires that fit that description.
"Is she going to be okay?" Mackenzie asked, as Evie finished the second bag of blood.
"She'll be fine. I would rather her stay here with me and Andrew for a few weeks, just until she learns to control her thirst."
"Who's Andrew?" Mackenzie asked. Isaac had never mentioned Andrew before.
"Andrew taught me everything I know. He found me a year after I turned and has took me under his wing ever since. I suppose you could say he's been like an older brother to me." Isaac explained, looking down at Evie.
Her eyes were completely red now and the veins running through her eyes looked black. It was quite scary.
"So you've known him for a couple of years now?" Mackenzie asked, drawing imaginary lines on her trousers.
"Ehh." Isaac said, chuckling before he continued. "I've known him for just over a century now."
Mackenzie's mouth dried at the words. That meant that Isaac was over 100 years old, but yet he looked like a normal 18 year old.
The one question was burning in Mackenzie's mind. She wanted to know his age, but at the same time, she would rather just know Isaac as the 18 year old vampire. She finally gave in to her curiosity.
"So what age are you exactly?" Mackenzie pushed
"119. I was born in 1899, on March 14th. Then in 1917, just a month after my 18th birthday, I was turned." Isaac said, taking a seat next to Evie, who was guzzling down her last bag of blood.
"How did it happen? The bite?"
"I was on my way home from a dance, when I was attacked by a woman. She brought me back to a house, where there were a few other boys like me. She said she was trying to build a strong army to go into the war to finish it."
"Wait, she was building a vampire army for the world war?" Mackenzie asked in shock.
"Yeah, and it wasn't just her. A few other people were involved too. I think they all worked for the government"
"So what happened?"
"I managed to escape after a year of being imprisoned. It was actually the night before they planned to send us out into the war. I ran for my life and somehow bumped into Andrew a few months later. Unfortunately within them few months, I met Thomas, but that's a story for another time." Isaac paused as the memories flooded through his mind, making his stomach churn with guilt. This was how Thomas wanted him to feel every time he thought back to that night.
Isaac pushed his memories aside and turned to Evie. "I bet you feel better after that." He smiled.
She nodded her head as she wiped the blood from the sides of her mouth. Mackenzie watched as the rosiness began to return to Evie's cheeks and the bags under her eyes weren't as prominent. She never looked more alive.
Evie's face dropped as she realised what she had just done. She looked down at the blood that she had wiped from the corners of her mouth. Why did she want to crave blood?
"What's happening to me?" She panicked.
"You're going through transitioning." Isaac began, taking the empty bags of blood in his hand.
Evie looked at Isaac, puzzled as to what he meant by 'transitioning'
"Within a few hours you will be a full Vampire." Isaac continued.
Evie shook her head in disbelief.
"No. I don't want to. I don't want this!" She shouted in fear.
"I know that this is scary for you but you can get through this Evie." Isaac said.
Evie looked over at Mackenzie will tears in her eyes, then slowly nodded her head in agreement.
"You're going to have to stay here for a few weeks. Just until I know that you have the urge under control." Isaac explained
"What do I tell my mum?" Evie worried
"I'll deal with your mum." Isaac said, reassuringly placing his hand on her shoulder.
"Okay well, I better get going before my dad begins to worry." Mackenzie said, getting up from the armchair.
"Of course. I'll show you out." Isaac said, getting up and leading Mackenzie to the door.
"Thank you so much for everything." Mackenzie said. "And about what I said earlier with the whole 'can't be your friend' crap, forget I ever said that." Mackenzie nervously laughed.
"Hey don't worry about it. See you in school on Monday?"
Mackenzie nodded her head, stepping outside. The sky had began to grow dark, as the moon lit up the sky. The air was still warm and a gentle breeze blew, blowing Mackenzie's hair to one side.
She began to walk towards her car. As she got into it, she sunk into her seat, taking in a deep breath. What a crazy day. She started up her engine, and waved at Isaac who was still standing in the doorway. Then drove back down the long lane.
It was funny how things worked out. Even though Mackenzie wanted to push Isaac away, she just couldn't. Thag small glimpse into Isaacs life, left Mackenzie wanting to learn more. She wanted to know the real Isaac. Not some made up story about him and his dad moving to here from Louisiana!
As she got into the house, she called Grace to let her know everything that happened. Grace had just learnt the fact that Vampires exist and now she was having to deal with the fact that one of her classmates was just turned into a vampire. Mackenzie felt sorry for her, but this whole situation was out of her control. It was just something that they would both have to learn to live with.
