That entire weekend, Mackenzie barely left her room. She spent hours, researching vampires and their history and it turns out that Addington has quite the history when it came to Vampires.
The Addington family were the first to settle on this part of America and so created the town, calling it after themselves. This town was built to be a 'safe haven' for Vampires, as the founding family were also Vampires. It was supposed to be a place where they didn't have to hide their true self.
As other small towns began to form just outside of Addington, the Vampires took advantage of this by going into the surrounding areas and killing their civilians. People began to talk. And talk spreads fast.
Soon enough, the town folk from the surrounding towns marched into Addington and killed every Vampire in sight, showing mercy to no one. A lot of people lost their lives that night, however, the Addington family managed to escape, never to be heard of again.
Through her research she learnt that vampires have super speed, which she has seen Thomas do plenty of times. They have great strength, and burnt in the sunlight which confused Mackenzie. How was Isaac and Thomas able to walk in the sunlight if it burnt them? Another trait was that they could manipulate your mind, this is what Thomas and Isaac call deception, and they can't survive on animal blood like vampires do in the movies. Mackenzie hated the thought of Isaac drinking human blood but she seen how he survived from blood bags. He wasn't hurting anyone, unlike Thomas.
Jason was beginning to grow more and more suspicious as to why Mackenzie was locking herself in her room for hours. He had considered what Lily suggested, but his heart was telling him that now wasn't the right time. If he told Mackenzie about Vampires, she wouldn't be able to cope. Mackenzie wasn't ready for that sort of thing in her life. He went upstairs to his daughters room and knocked on the door.
Mackenzie slammed her laptop lid shut and hid the books that she had been reading about Vampires, then opened the door for her father.
"Hey." He said
"Hi."
"I got a takeaway if you wanna come down and get some. Liam is out at the moment so he won't bother us." Jason said, in an attempt to get his daughter to leave her room.
"Ah yeah sure." Mackenzie said, slipping out of the door and shutting it tight behind her.
She followed her dad downstairs and into the kitchen where he had food from the local Chinese, spread across the dining table.
The smell of the food made Mackenzie's mouth water. She sat down and began picking out what food she wanted. She loved spring rolls and her dad always made sure to get them for her.
"I've barely seen you this weekend Kenz." Jason said, setting a drink next to Mackenzie, then taking his seat across from her.
"I've been so busy doing a project." Mackenzie lied.
"I can help you if you need help."
"No." Mackenzie quickly said. "I mean...it's almost finished anyway, but I have another history project coming up, so you can help me with that if you want." Mackenzie smiled.
She didn't like to lie to her dad, but she had to protect him from the truth. Just like Jason has to protect Mackenzie from the truth.
Mackenzie's hands began to play with the necklace that sat around her neck. She had to ask her dad about where he got it. How did it protect her from being deceived?
"Where did you get this necklace from?" Mackenzie asked, making her dad choke on his water.
"Ha sorry, went down the wrong pipe." He chuckled, patting his chest.
Jason looked nervous. He kept touching his face, something that Mackenzie noticed that he did when he got anxious.
"You remember when you were 11 and Liam and I went on a trip to Massachusetts?" He asked.
Mackenzie remembered her father telling her that he and Liam decided to go on a 'Grown ups holidays' and wouldn't be back for a few weeks. She believed her father and never thought any more of it. That was until now.
"Well, when I was out looking for something to get you, I saw that pretty little necklace in a stall on the street. The lady told me that a witch used to own it in the 1600s. I thought it was a cool story." Jason chuckled.
Just like Mackenzie, Jason hated lying to his daughter. In fact, the reason Jason and Liam went to Massachusetts was to search for the witch, Astra. Jason had bought the necklace days before leaving home, then had the witch place the spell inside the rock of the necklace.
Either way, Jason's story got Mackenzie thinking. We're witches real too?

Grace, Mackenzie and Isaac sat on the picnic benches in school at lunchtime. For once, the sun was shining high in the sky and the heat bounced from the grounds. Mackenzie could see the heat haze, rising from the ground causing a smile to form on her face. It was a sign that the summer holidays were close and Mackenzie was in disparate need of a break from school.
"How's she doing?" Grace asked Isaac, making Mackenzie look up from the book she was reading.
Grace had been worried sick all weekend. She didn't want the same thing happening to Evie, that happened to Freddie.
"A little better. She still has a long way to go." Isaac truthfully answered.
Mackenzie felt guilty. If she had of told Evie that she couldn't meet up with her for coffee, then she never would have got bitten. Evie was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. But it was Mackenzie's ain't that she ended up at that place at that time.
Suddenly, an arm swung over Graces shoulder as the person sat down next to her. It was Josh, the boy that had been crushing on Grace for what seemed like an eternity.
"Hey, I'm having a party at my house tonight if you wanna come." Josh said, showing his dazzling smile to both the girls.
"Oh I don't know." Mackenzie said, closing her book over.
Neither of the girls had went out in a while and their dinner out never really counted as a night out due to Thomas cutting it short so a party seemed like a great idea to Grace.
"Of course we'll go." Grace said. "All three of us will be there."
Both Isaac and Mackenzie looked at Grace with a bewildered look. They had more important things to be doing than going to some high school house party.
"Great! I'll see you guys there!" Josh said, getting up and leaving before they could change their minds.
Grace loved going to parties and she loved to meet people. She was an energetic and loveable person and was always the life of the party.
Mackenzie always admired how confident Grace was. Grace knew that she was pretty and embraced her beauty. Something Mackenzie envied.
"Look, we need to clear our heads from all this drama." Grace cheerfully said. "It'll be fun!"
"A party?! Oh goodie goodie." A voice mocked from behind Mackenzie.
She knew who it was and the thought of him being anywhere near her, made her blood boil.
She turned around to see Thomas, with an all too familiar smirk on his face. His arms were folded across his chest and you could tell that he had a lot on his mind. He looked down at Grace and winked at her, making her scoff.
"What do you want." Isaac spat.
"Well it's nice to know that I'm welcome." Thomas said, placing his hands on Mackenzie's shoulders, giving them a gentle squeeze.
Mackenzie brushed his hands from her shoulders, trying to avoid all contact with him as possible.
"What do you want." Mackenzie asked, getting fed up with Thomas' games.
"I just wanted to know how our little newbie vampire was getting on." Thomas said, directing the question to Isaac.
"How do you know about Evie?" Grace asked, anger clear in her voice.
"I saw it happen." He bluntly said, taking a crisp from Mackenzie's crisp packet.
"Why did you try to help her!" Mackenzie yelled, standing up for her seat.
"Please. Just stop shouting for a second, I can't hear myself think." Thomas said, smiling down at Mackenzie. "I was too busy trying to figure out who it was biting her. I didn't recognise him. Plus Evie isn't really my concern." Thomas said.
Mackenzie sat back down in her seat, letting out a huff in anger.
Everyone fell quite. Mackenzie could practically hear an evil plan brewing in Thomas' mind as he spluttered out
"Well, this is enough high school musical for me. I guess I'll go tell Evie about the party." He shrugged, vanishing at Vampire speed.
"No!" Isaac stood up and shouted, but was too late.
He sat back down, letting out a long sigh. Thomas always had to get in the way and start some sort of drama!
"I guess we're going to a party." He sighed

Grey clouds covered the sky as night fell upon Addington. The area around the front of Josh's house was filled with cars of the students from Addington High. Mackenzie pulled up outside of Josh's house with Grace in the passenger seat. Josh's family were on their annual holiday to Paris, only this year, Josh decided to stay behind to 'focus on studying' for his upcoming exams.
Of course his parents bought the lie. Josh could do no wrong. He was the most perfect, sweet little angel. Well, that's what his parents thought at least.
