She looked around once more, none of it was familiar to her. She took careful steps around the courtyard, as her long midnight hair tapped, and twisted around her ankles, almost acting as if it too wanted to see her fall down.
Shaking her head, her hands hanged loosely by her side. Her body seemed like a stranger. Her gaze turned toward the castle again, maybe someone knew who she was? She had no idea, but she had nothing more to lose.
She shyly stepped toward the castle, slowly but surely she finally made her way in. Inside it was dimly lighted, beside one of the pillars a knight was slumped against it half asleep. He seemed like a good person to ask, so she made her way to his side.
Reaching out her hand, she lightly tapped his shoulder. She waited, but after a minute he didn’t respond. She tapped him once more. Again he didn’t respond. His face was relaxed as he continued to nap.
“Excuse me sir.” she called out, watching as his sleeping face finally woke up. His head turned to the girl, he blinked a couple of times before he finally responded.
“Yeah, what can I do for you?” She tried to find the right words to say, her mouth wordless moved.
“Speak up.” He said as his face turned into impatience.
A female guard suddenly walked down the stairs, she noticed the girl in the green dirty dress right away. Running over, the guard’s face turned into a smirk as she poked Adelaide in the shoulder.
“Do you like him or something? I mean look at you!” The female guard started walking away, laughing her face off from what she just came across. Adelaide wasn’t expecting that.
“So?” The knight was still there, except he had his arms crossed as he stared at the young girl in front of him.
Her face twisted into a confused expression, she looked lost and hopeless. Her hands were tightly holding onto the hem of her dress.
The knight looked down at the floor realizing for the first time she wasn’t wearing any shoes.
“Umm, I don’t know who I am.” She shouted shaking her head. Her long dark hair sliced through the air.
His eyes raised back to her face. “You look like you’re ready to cry there kid.” His voice was deep, and seemed to have a sense of humour in it.
“Don’t make fun of me!” Her light eyes suddenly turned fiery and dark. She wasn’t about to let anyone make a fool out of her. “You can laugh at me all you want, but I know I’m not making this up. If you don’t want to help me then that’s fine, but I just don’t remember my own name.” Her voice turned softer, and softer as she finished speaking.
The knight moved closer to the young girl. “Alrighty, what do you remember then?” Trying to be kind, he placed his hand on her shoulder.
She raised her face to look at him, and wondered for a moment. A faint tune started to play in her head, a women’s warm voice hummed a beautiful tune. Without responding to the knight, she opened her mouth as the same tune started to ring out.
She was humming that very tune, it was one of the most beautiful things she ever heard. Adelaide’s eyes closed as she changed from humming to singing “the castle is busy with all of the hustle, but he’s by my side with all of the bustle, he’s my king and commander, the only one who knows how I love him so..” Tears ran down her cheek as she stopped singing.
The knight backed up in shock for he knew that song. It was what the late queen would sing about her husband, it was simple, but it made the king smile every time he heard it.
“Princess Adelaide!” The Knight bellowed.
The young girl looked behind her shoulder, tears still stained on her cheeks. The knight had fallen into a deep bow.
