An Apology

An Apology

Aug 05, 2018

I left work at exactly 6.20pm and walked down the street towards my car. I decided to pass by the cafe and grab some coffee and maybe croissants too. I hadn't talked to Heidi for weeks and I wasn't about to reach out to her. I'd never felt so betrayed my entire life. How dare she bring up Mr. Davidson! He was a topic we had promised each other never to touch.

Coffee and bag of a dozen croissants in hand, I slipped back into my car and got ready to buckle up.

Tap! Tap! Tap!

Coffee spilled on my left hand and I quickly placed it in the cup holder before I turned to face the intruder standing outside my window. I cleaned the spilled coffee and was lucky it hadn't caused so much damage. He motioned for me to roll down the window and I hesitated between the door lock and window buttons.

"Sorry to catch you off guard like this," Todd said. "Could I kindly speak to you?"

"Uh-" I started glancing at my coffee. "Sure, let me just  grab my coffee."

How did he even find me?

"I'm sorry about how Keith behaved," Todd said. We were sitting in the terrace outside the cafe. "He has a way of ruining almost everything."

"You don't have to apologize for his behaviour, he's a grown man," I replied and sipped my coffee.

Keith had not really shocked me. I actually anticipated his behaviour. Heidi's though, that, I never saw coming.

"Well, I actually knew he did hook up with Heidi. He had his eyes on her the whole night and I could tell he'd get what he wanted eventually."

"So, you chose not to say anything because?" I asked clearly over his apology.

"It was not my place to say anything and after she stood up for him, I knew things would get worse so, I kept my mouth shut."

"How noble of you."

"Kathleen, I know you're upset and that we ruined your friendship with Heidi and all but, you need to understand that you had no control over any of it." He said looking at me dead in the eyes.

"Of course I know that," I scoffed. "And she can do whatever she damn well pleases."

"So can you," he added.

"Meaning what exactly?" I shot back.

"Would you like to have dinner with me sometime?" Todd asked.

"With Keith and Andrew too?" I deadpanned.

"Touché," he chuckled. "Well, just the two of us."

"Maybe," I replied.

"I can work with maybe," He replied smiling.
