I wish I could look away, but it’s too late. Our eyes meet. He doesn’t call out to the others. When there’s one more flashlight lit in our direction, he stands in front of the bushes and looks toward the gates. In the light I see Milo. A sense of relief washes over me. He doesn’t look at our bush again. Instead, he whispers to us.
“The reason I'm not getting the others is that I’ll be getting you both killed,” I let a deep breath out, and so does Sailor. “Yve, I’ll make sure that Tristayne knows what you’re up to, and Sailor—” He pauses to think. He can't stay near us for much longer, but I know he wants to scream at him. “Leave for a couple hours, and do not get caught. I will think about not murdering you when you get back.” When Milo leaves, Sailor doesn’t say a word. I could hear the anger in his voice. Both of us should have thought about how much trouble we would get in. Not could. It's lucky we were noticed by someone we know.
Once we're sure everyone is back on the property, Sailor and I creep out of the bushes quietly and continue running through the woods as fast as possible. We’re lucky that they didn’t send any dogs out after whatever they thought the cause was. Both of us keep close to the road but stay out of sight. As we run I smile a little.
“Sounds like you’re in a lot of trouble when you get back.”
“You are too. He said he’s letting Tris know.”
“He’ll be more concerned about me making it back in one piece. He’s worried about my safety, not the specific things I do."
“I think Milo would be less mad if I were leaving with someone else.” I slow down to a jog.
“What does that mean?”
“I don't think he likes you that much,” He’s quiet for a moment. “He thinks you’re a bad influence.” I stop entirely and cross my arms.
“It’s your fault. You frame yourself for stuff all the time. He probably knows that I was the one who came up with this. He won't like that you chose to came, though."
“It doesn't really matter. It doesn’t matter how many times I get in trouble, honestly. They never follow through on the promise of kicking me out. They would drop you in a heartbeat for whatever reason.”
“It's easy to tell why they see you as more useful. You just don't give a shit about anything you do. Even if you get hurt. I, on the other hand, am too cautious for their taste.”
"I can see that, I guess."
Once we’ve run for about a mile, we reach a spot where the trees thin out, creating a semi-circle on both sides of the road. A woman stands there next to a shiny black car. When she sees us, she grins.
“I heard the sirens and thought you may not be coming, kid,” She says to Sailor.
“We almost didn’t.” He walks up to her and holds his wrist with his tattoo out. With her phone, the scans it. I start to worry about our trackers. Won't they see the purchase history for Sailor? When a light under his skin blinks a vibrant green, she pulls away. “How much was that again?”
“Six hundred.” He nods, and she walks over to a different car across the road. “When you’re finished with it, drive it back here. If it’s undamaged, you get 75% back.” She calls. He doesn’t acknowledge her and walks around to the driver’s seat. I stand still for a moment. When he raises an eyebrow at me, I sigh.
“How is Milo going to not notice that many missing univs?” I ask once she's gone.
“Oh, he’ll notice. I was going to lie and say I bought something that was a little expensive, but I don't have to now. That's probably going to get looked over at this point.” I think twice about getting into the car, but eventually, decide to jump into the passenger side.
"The facility will notice that there was a transaction. Did you think about that?"
"She's a hacker too. She can change the location and item that appears on the history. They'll know about the money but it'll look like we were there."
"How did you meet her?"
"She deserted after graduation. A friend of a guy in my class. She wants them to find out about us getting the car just as much as you do." I close my eyes. My heart is racing, but it also feels like it's stopped completely.
“Might as well make the best of the situation, I guess.”
“Hey, we didn’t get caught by someone else. That’s what matters.”
“Where are we going?” I ask, leaning back in the seat.
“You’ll see. Don’t you worry.”
"Can I ask you one more question?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"What if they see that we're gone when they call roll?"
"We'll be able to find out if they're coming for us, and you and I will figure out a way to hide. Have a little faith in Tris and Milo before you worry about that, though."
