“We have been out here for 4 weeks now, are we getting closer to the field?” I said catching my breath, after walking for 4 weeks straight, I got very tired.
“Yeah, we are almost there, we will be there by the end of the day.” How can she still have so much energy?
For the past weeks, we came a long way, I had my jobs, she had hers. For example, when we made camp, I would set up camp while she got our dinner ready. She was also in charge of navigating.
In the week before we left, Maggie and I did some research, we found only one place that a house could be at. It is a clearing farthest from our village, that is where we are heading now, everywhere else, the forest was too dense.
After a couple of hours Maggie spoke again. “See, the field is right up here you can start to see it now.” Excited, I jogged to catch up with Maggie and saw the field. When we got closer to the clearing, my hope sank.
“There's nothing here.” I couldn't say anymore, just stared at the empty field
“I'm sorry I shouldn't have suggested doing this, lets camp here. We will head back in the morning.” She was trying to comfort me, But it did not work.
“It's not your fault, you did this for me.” My sight never left the field
I start to set up camp while Maggie went back into the forest, our food supply from the last time she hunted had ran out. After the fire was made, I stared into it, the silence was both a blessing and a curse. I thought of her sitting under a tree waiting for me, my back to the house she lived in. The only thing I felt was pain and misery.
When we got back to the town, my life continued on like nothing happened, I went to work, got dragged to parties and got coffee with Maggie. Nothing changed, but it felt like nothing was the same.
