Clara sits Evita and me down on the couch. She doesn’t say anything, just glares at me. Evita looks down at her feet. She’s so small. It’s like she could curl up into a ball, cover her face with that long charcoal hair and disappear into the cushions.
“Can you please say something to me?” She turns her back to me.
“Tyler,” She sighs. “Yelling at you won’t get me anywhere.” I wince. Tyler that name feels so wrong. I know that she says it when she’s angry with me, but it doesn’t sound like it’s my name at all.
“I’m not asking for you to yell. I just want you to say something.”
“They have reason to execute you if they find out. You helped two people escape. Even Evita can get in trouble now because of her hacking the scanner.” She glances back at me. "Something that can get every single one of us killed now." I enabled Yve and Sailor, and I forced Evita to get into trouble. She didn’t do anything wrong. I want her to be left alone. There seven of us in total who could have our heads chopped off for this. Or whatever it was that they want to do. It hasn’t happened in a long time, but the government would not hesitate to kill us. Leaving in any way is treason.
“I wanted to get Yve out. She wants out of this place, and I have the power to offer her that. Even if it’s for a couple of hours. Clara I—”
“It isn’t an excuse.”
“I’m not trying to make excuses, but—”
“No buts.” She growls. “How are they getting back in? You can’t hack them back in without another panic.”
“I’m trying to figure that out.”
“Trying is not good enough. You should have known that this would happen.”
“I thought about them climbing up a tree and scaling the building.”
“The roof doors are locked at night.”
“Yve isn’t scared to make her way down into the courtyard. Sailor is close enough to his window that if Milo opens it, he can jump right in. There aren’t any cameras in the rooms. If they avoid the cameras outside, they’re fine.”
“Do they have their uniforms on?” She doesn’t bother to ask if Milo and Tristayne will open the windows. It’s a given. Yve and Sailor can't just walk in the front doors without getting cuffed immediately.
“Yeah.” I shrug.
“They’re going to do roll call all over again.”
“It isn’t like they won’t be back by morning.” She sighs.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do. They’re smart. All I had to do is stop the cameras from working for a little while and do stuff with the gate. I promise that they'll be back tomorrow. Sailor told me their plans step by step." She turns around abruptly.
“You do realize that can be counted as the destruction of property, right!" She completely ignores the rest of my response. It's like all she cares about is the cameras and herself.
“It’s true! You’re essentially asking me how everything went down and I am telling you!” She slams her hand on our table.
“Sleep on the couch. You’re done with the electronics for the rest of the week. Evita,” She waits for Evita to look at her. “You are too.”
“Okay.” She says quietly. I hear her voice break. She isn’t in trouble, but she feels like she is.
“Clara! It isn’t her fault!" She ignores me and walks into her room and slams the door. She's getting Evita in trouble to make me feel even worse about the situation. How petty.
I look at Evita and throw my arm around her. “You know it’s not your fault, right?” She nods and curls up closer to me. “You’re not going to lose me. I’m never leaving you. You’re my sister. The most important person in my life.”
“Okay.” She whispers.
