So, things are about to get pretty confusing. I wanted to try to ease you into all of this, but maybe a more lengthy explanation is necessary. If you aren't worried about being able to keep up, feel free to tune this out, but if you're at all wondering what's up with the twins and this weird Tower place, I'll give you some quick backstory.
Around the time he finished high school, Deejay invented a machine he called the Warp Gate, a device that opens portals between dimensions, or parallel universes or something. I don’t know how it works. Once that breakthrough happened, he decided he wanted to study everything and anything he found on the other side of the portals.
When Deejay began his mission to explore and catalog the multiverse, and when Ty somehow got talked into going along with him, they decided it was worth establishing a base of operations far away from the Earth they called home, in case anything went catastrophically wrong. In a remote corner of the galaxy, they found a conveniently Earth-like planet. It was habitable in terms of temperature, atmosphere, and other stuff planets need to have so they don't kill you. It was also completely uninhabited by any form of intelligent life. Ty suggested they call the planet Utopia. I think it was meant to be a joke.
Anyway, they started out with a small research station, basically a glorified tent, outfitted with all of the state-of-the-art gear Deejay could get his hands on, standing in the shadow of a giant ominous black stone tower, which as far as we know doesn't have any reason for being there. It's the only structure of its kind on the planet, or at least the only one the boys have found.
The project was all self-funded. Deejay had become independently wealthy thanks to the crap-load of patents he held back home from his earlier projects: wireless communication tech, some new type of electromagnet, a more responsive touch-screen, half a dozen prototypes for artificial intelligence systems, and one highly potent strain of cannabis that he swears on a stack of bibles was only ever developed for medical purposes. And we all totally believe that, don’t we?
As the expeditions across the multiverse began, they started encountering more and more people in other universes who wanted to go back with the brothers when they left. Whether due to personal reasons, or out of a sense of adventure, a lack of options, or the imminent threat of death from one thing or another, a lot of people desperately needed somewhere to go and start their life over, and the boys had that to offer.
The more people came to Utopia, the more the base had to grow to permanently house all of the people joining it. Ty and Deejay moved most of their gear into the Tower, while the base became the primary living and working space for the new recruits, with a couple of exceptions that'll become obvious. Over a few short years, the base grew into a town of hundreds. Businesses formed to help house, feed, clothe, and entertain all of the people. A government had to be formed to manage everything. And as with most governments, the town council of Esperanza didn’t get a whole lot done to serve its people. At least, not quickly enough for most people’s liking.
Today, Deejay’s research into the multiverse continues, Ty does his best to help the people of Esperanza build a thriving home on this strange alien world, and somehow, things just keep getting weirder from there.
Also, I live there, in the Tower. You can call me Jay if you want.
