“Bobbie. Bobbie. Wake up!” Mindy hissed in my ear.
“Hmm?”
“Ms. Nassar’s ghost talk to you in a dream?” She asked.
I nodded.
“Gods. Of course she reached out to you.” Mindy cursed.
“I wanna know you the boy you're fucking is.” I teased.
“Really?” Mindy rolled her eyes.
“Yeah. You're my sister so I get to know.”
“Fine. His name is Cal. Son of Dionysus. He's really into musical theatre.” Mindy whispered.
“And you're whispering why?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Cal broke up with his boyfriend after the first time we hooked up while we were drunk and high and well I don't want people to say stuff like 'she’s just like her father,’ 'Leave it to a daughter of Zeus to be a whore.’ among other things. I love him though. He’s so fun and sweet.” Mindy frowned.
“Well I think y'all are lucky to have each other.” I poked her nose. Not for any reason, I just wanted to do it. Mindy smiled and poked me back. So I poked her again. We went back and forth; poking each other until we were both laughing. I was in pain the whole time but it was a dull pain.
“Damn, you two shut the fuck up!” Bec yelled from the floor.
“Never!” Me and Mindy yelled together.
I looked over at Jamie to see him looking around with a half asleep look on his face. “What's going on? What are we never doing? Is it being straight?” He asked.
I laughed. “It was shutting the fuck up but that too.”
“Ah. I see. Good morning anyway. You look like shit, B.” Jamie said.
“I feel like shit too. Now anyone care to explain why y'all are all in my room?” I waved my hands around and pointed towards Mindy and then Jamie.
“After my father hit you, me and Kore carried you here. Johanna healed you the best she could be he said it’ll be about a day before you are healed completely. Megara came in after she saw Johanna leave with some of your blood on her shirt. She was pissed when she saw you all beat up and bandage,” Mindy said.
“The little kid came and got me. Said you were hurt and that you needed a friend by your side. Willow had to stay in the infirmary for the night for safety reasons but he’s gonna come by later.” Jamie inputted.
“Kore had texted Bec before that. So we were all in here worried about you. And maybe I had an argument with Megara about being your sister.” Mindy frowned. She glanced over at where Megara was sleeping.
“It got nasty. Lots of cussing. And hitting,” Jamie said.
“It ended when Megara saw a large bruise on my arm and I told her I had jumped in front of you, and that I've had worse done to me by him and I couldn't let it happen to you.” Mindy said. She was shaking. I grabbed her and and squeeze it, lightly. Something inside of me sparked. A memory.
I looked at Mindy, she was four just like me. And she was crying, her face was bloody.
“What's wrong?” I asked.
“Father hit me. Why do I have to go back?” She cried.
“I don't know. One day I will protect you. Your father will not hurt you again.” I said.
Mindy smiled and hugged me.
I blinked. “I would have lived then. You shouldn't have jumped in front of him. You've been suffering for years,” I said.
“That doesn't matter right now. What matters is the quest. What matters is the fact that we're descendants of Apollo. What matters is that prophecy. What matters is that we are more powerful. What matters is the plants growing through your mattress. Not me or my father. Got it?” Mindy squeezed my hand.
I nodded. She was wrong but I wasn't going to tell her that.
“You two are descendants of Apollo?” Megara had woken up.
“Yes?” I answered her.
“That explains your mother being the Oracle. Gods, that is crazy,” Megara said.
“We know.” Me and Mindy responded together.
“That's just creepy.” Bec pointed at us.
Everyone -but Kore who was still sleeping- laughed.
It felt like there was no tension in the room for just a moment. But then there was a knock.
“Come in!” I yelled.
The door opened and Johanna came in with four backpacks.
“Listen. Kore, Bobbie, Bec and Mindy need to go now. Zeus is pissed. Demeter's pissed. Things are gonna get ugly and Willow said it you guys are running out of time.” She said. Bec shook Kore awake.
“But Bobbie is still hurt.” Mindy said.
Johanna dropped the backpacks, in her hand was a vial.
“Apollo's tears. They heal injuries quickly but only for Apollo's children and descendants. Drink it,” She said as she tossed it onto my lap.
“You knew?”
“Josephine can tell someone's family by patterns in their DNA. She could tell that you guys related to us. Now you need to go!” Johanna yelled the last part. The room shook.
“It already went off. Fuck. I have to go. The hall of Hades had a bomb planted there. Kids are probably hurt in nearby halls. I- I have to go.” And she was gone.
I picked up the vial, opened it and drank it. The tears were nasty but I could feel myself getting better.
“Let's go,” I said.
“Go through my room, my window has a tree by it. Bec's shadows won't work during the day. And yes I knew you snuck out the other night wit them,” Megara said.
I climbed out of bed, grabbed my shoes and some random clothes to put on later. I looked at Jamie and smiled.
“Take care of Willow, and also congrats on getting married. When y'all have a real wedding, I better be your best man. Got it?” I told him.
Jamie just nodded. He had fear in his eyes.
“Bobbie, let's go.” Mindy said, she already had a backpack on and had another one in her hands. Bec and Kore were also up with backpacks on.
“I'm coming.” I said. Mindy handed me the backpack and I stuffed my junk in quickly. The three of us ran out of my room and into Megara’s. As Kore and Mindy opened the window I noticed some of the photos Megara had all over her wall. Some had her and Lexie along with a South Asian girl and a black guy. Some were of her and three other. But most were of her and Z Deak or just Z. Strange. I had thought she hated Zeus and his kids. Hmm, interesting.
“Bobbie. Come on.” Mindy pulled me from my thoughts.
She was almost out the window. As soon as she was out I went to. The tree was an apple tree. Some of the branches had formed a ramp to the ground. The others were already on the ground. As I walked I kicked my cast against the wood. It broke off some before I got to the others.
“When to now?”
“The garage. It's not far.” Kore said, her fingers trembling. The ground shook. I looked at the building. The other side of the building was on fire. Another boom probably.
“Persephone's hall,” Bec said, tears were in their eyes.
Kore picked Bec up and took off running; Mindy and I followed them. Other demigods were out in the yard, some yelled at us, others just stared. I saw Z Deak looking at us. He was the only one who waved at us, trying to get us to stop. Mindy saw him too.
“Don't worry about it! We're fine. Someone just tried to kill Bec and Kore! Take care of Robin, Zeke, and Grace.” Mindy yelled to him as he started to run towards us. He stopped and nodded.
Kore set Bec down in front of a garage. She signed something I couldn't see and then went in. Mindy ran in after her.
I leaned against the garage. I was really getting out of shape, I really should have gone to the gym in the last few weeks instead of watching bootleg musicals.
“Kore should have carried your slow ass instead.” Bec grumbled.
“You didn't want to be carried?” I teased.
“Kore's protective. Two bombings where we spend our time, well that freak her out. She use to pick me up a lot when there was trouble when we were younger.” Bec said.
“Oh.” I looked down at my feet.
The big garage door opened next to us. I looked over to see Kore and Mindy each driving a motorcycle. Mindy waved me over to hers. I walked over to the metal death machine. Mindy had two helmets on her handlebars.
“Let's ride!” She smiled widely. I grabbed one of the helmets and slipped it on.
I have never in my life rode a motorcycle and I have never wanted to do so. So as I climbed on, I was shaking a little. A motorcycle is far more scarier than any god. As I wrapped my arms around Mindy, I felt little jolts of electricity coming from her.
I made a mental note that I should convince Bec to ride with her instead next time.
I looked out if the corner of my eye as we rode pass buildings. I saw Demeter, staring at us. She was crying. I felt a bad for her. Two of her children were dead. Another one was dying. I felt guilty. Afterall I was the reason two of her other children were dead.
Their blood was on my hands.
