There's a lot of research into how an already quite impactful place like Chavin (featuring a maze of underground tunnels) was made even more otherworldly with the use of light, sound, smells and... hallucinogens. (I suggest googling "chavin conch trumpet" if you want to hear how spooky they sound!)
