They asked me what the future was like. I told them that we humans were no longer afraid of the lions and tigers. That we have grown beyond the struggles for food and survival, and have turned our attentions toward achieving great feats like building skyscrapers, going to the moon, and splitting the atom.
The ancient humans were amazed almost to the point of disbelief. They looked upon me with hopeful eyes. "Oh ambassador of the future, if we have ascended to such heights as a species, then surely we must have discovered the meaning of life? Tell us, please. For what cosmic purpose were we given our sentience?"
I withheld from laughing at the sheer naivete of the question. I wanted to tell them that we did not build skyscrapers, go to the moon, or split the atom in search for the meaning of life, and that we in fact made those accomplishments to spite our lack of cosmic significance. I wanted to tell them that, but woke up before I could.
