Aiyana and Ella were in Ella’s family The cabin was set in the midst of a clearing in the woods out in Delaware. The cabin was made of oak logs and spruce planks. There was a chimney to the back of the living room immediately after the door , then a kitchen to the right, the bathroom to the left. Beyond the kitchen was the second dining room. On the second floor, the bedrooms and the large office with two desks, two filing cabinets, and a large bookshelf. The basement was their favorite. The old-timer early 1900s bar, fully stocked with all their favorite drinks. They had a dart board down there and a pool table.
Aiyana woke to the birds chirping outside her window. They would sit on the tree and chirp until she woke up and talked to them. “I'm up little birdies…” she said as she stretched. She got up and walked over to the window. She smiled and started whistling a song to them. She looked around at her room. There was a full sized bed with a brown and black bed set. She had half a dozen pillows on her bed. She walked over to her dresser and opened it. It was dark oak and looked really old. She had a radio on a table by the door with a huge CD stand full of Native American music. Her favorite was R Carlos Nakai. He played the Native American Flute, a beautifully sounding instrument that takes skill and precision. She took out her denim shorts and a black tank top that said, No Coffee, No Talkee. It was her favorite shirt. She got dressed and walked downstairs. Her black combat boots clapped against the floor with every step.
She was careful not to wake Ella. She was used to waking up with little to no sleep, but she knew after their last case, Ella needed rest. She figured she would make breakfast for her and Ella. If Aiyana knew Ella and she did Ella wasn’t one for… As she put it “Tree hugger bullshite.” Ella was fond of Bacon,Eggs and Sausage. As Aiyana preferred a good healthier meal of Turkey bacon, egg whites and blueberry yogurt.
When Ella finally did stumble down the stairs. Aiyana just looked at her and to put it nicely she looks like crap.
Ella groaned “remind me no whiskey on work nights.”
“If I said that you’d want to do it more.” Aiyana sighed as she placed a plate of egg, bacon and sausage by Ella's typical spot.
Ella mumbled a, “thanks kid”then looked over at Aiyana’s plate “The bloody hell is this?” Pointing to her healthy choice.
“It's breakfast.”
“Nah, I know breakfast, ya see that right there is Prude in a plate. Here’s some advice love, live, clog yer arteries, if ya don’t yer gonna die unhappy. I’ll tell ya that breakfast of Hippocrates it’s stocked full of chemicals, GMOs, preservatives. At least I’m upfront about the sewage that flows in my veins.” Ella placed her hand on her head and groaned. “Got any aspirin?” Aiyana walked away and returned with two aspirin and handed them to Ella.
“Thank god for coffee.”
Aiyana sat down and took a bite of her Turkey bacon. “Delicious.” She laughed at the disgusted look apparent on Ella's face.
“Hey, you wanna be miserable, have at it.”
“I enjoy being healthy, knowing exactly what's in my food and it really doesn't taste that bad.”
“It tastes like Satan’s armpit.”
Aiyana burst out laughing. “Whatever, you eat what you eat, I'll eat what I eat.”
“Alright but when when your a restless spirit I’m not helping you.” Ella sassed waving her fork with sausage in the air.
“Deal…” She smiles as she takes a bite of egg whites.
It was mid day, they each sat at their separate desks, Ella was searching the newspapers for any cases, while Aiyana did the same with the internet. Aiyana paused, looked to Ella. “Think I've got one.”
“What 'ave ya got?”
“Statue of liberty, seventeen people jumped off. Throughout the past seventeen months. Happens on the eighteenth of every month like clockwork.”
“Interesting.”
“That's too coincidence to be a coincidence. Has to be our kind of job.”
“What are ya thinkin’?”
“Could be a ghost, could be a demon, could be witchcraft. Could be a lot of things. We'll know more once we start investigating.”
They had been on the road a while, Aiyana could see Ella yawn from the corner of her eye. She was obviously tired.
“Ella, let me drive. You need to sleep.”
“Na, I'm good.” She yawned.
“Yeah, good my ass. Come on, pull over. Let me take over.”
“Ah, ya bloody brat.”
“Ella…”
“Okay, okay…” She pulled over to the side of the highway and they switched seats. She laid her head on the seat as Aiyana started driving.
It was early morning, the sun was barely visible when Ella woke up. “Morning sleepy head.”
“How long was I out?”
“Give or take six hours. You snore by the way.” She smirked.
“I don't snore, you snore through ,like an elderly cow.”
She laughed. “We both snore, see, I can compromise.”
“Whatever, what did you get from the reports?”
“Well, I stopped along the highway a few hours ago, did some light research. Apparently all of the victims had been traitors at some time in the year before their deaths, and suddenly had the urge to see the statue of liberty.”
“It's like something called them to the damn thing.”
“Yeah, so I'm still leaning towards ghost.”
“Yeah, could be. Anyway, you made the business cards?”
“Yeah.” She reached into her pocket book and took out two small plastic boxes full of business cards. “So when talking to the family, were gonna be reporters looking for information.” She then took out two FBI badges. “Police don't answer to reporters though. We've gotta kick it up a notch sometimes.”
“This is why I kept you.” They laughed and exchanged glances.
They stood outside of the seventh victims house, he was one of the ones they had some questions about. The door opened, revealing a thin man with blond hair and a pink polo shirt and khaki shorts. “Hello, how can I help you?”
“Hi, is this the residence of the Scott family?”
“Yes, my name is Tyler Scott, can I help you with something?” Just then two young African and Asian girls ran up to him.
“Daddy, who are these ladies?”
“We’re reporters.”
“What do you do?”
“We make stories about things that happen and talk about them to people.”
“Girls, why don't you go back to the tea party while I talk to the reporters.”
“Okay Daddy, but Mr. Sniffleton might drink your tea.”
“I'm sorry about them. We don't get much company after Thomas died. He was the entertainer.”
“We have just a few questions if you don't mind?”
“Okay, but just a few, I have to make the children lunch.”
“Did your husband ever mention another person, possibly a boyfriend, maybe someone who wanted more than friendship?”
“Look, I don't know who you've been talking to. Thomas had a one night stand with his boss. It was a mistake, people make mistakes. But he was a good husband, and an even better father. Be sure to put that in your report.” He angrily shut the door after asking them to leave.
“Ok so that was worlds most awkward children’s tea party. Not everyday two little girls get to hear the press call Daddy a cheater. I mean… where did that come from that came from left field?” Ella questioned.
“I don’t know but I do know that if two people seem that perfect one is keeping secrets.” Aiyana responded.
“Friendly advice for next time maybe don’t lead with the most intimidating question. Let’s check out the home of the next Vic.Baron Notes … we have an appointment with his son Charlie best not to keep rich boys waitin.” Ella smirked
“As in Bachelor billionaire of Charlie Notes of Notes industries? Wait I.. heard about his father's death.” Aiyana frowned.
“Hi My name Is Isabelle McGee this is Ana Gibbs. We are Mr. Notes 11:00.” Ella smiled at the receptionist who motioned for them to go up.
The elevator ride was awkward and quiet although Aiyana’s mind was racing as they walked to the office of Charlie Notes himself.
“Hi Agents McGee and Gibbs F.B.I.” Ella stated with confidence.
“Can I see your badges.” Charlie asked.
Ella handed them over. “Seems legit.” Aiyana could’ve swore he winked at her when he said that. “ask away.” He added Charlie’s blondish hair made golden by the sunlight. His eyes playful as he jumped into his leather chair sinking in his suit slightly wrinkled from his criss crossed seating position. His arm resting on the chair arm.
“Have you ever noticed anything odd before your fathers death cold spots odd smells.” Ella lead.
“Yeah. Why? Scared I might have a weed problem like all the other Businessmen?” There was an awkward silence
“Lighten up I’m kidding.” Charlie added
“Oh ok good.” Aiyana responded.
“But seriously odd smells why ask that?” Charlie questioned.
“We think somebody may have been tampering with the ventilation. Maybe egging the building harassment may have led to suicide.” Aiyana answered.
“How about grudges? Did your father step on the wrong toes, piss in the wrong pots?” Ella questioned with her Irish accent.
“Look I’m going to level with you. My father was not the best man. Hell, he was shady. Honestly he stole the idea for this company and cheated his way to the top. Leaving everyone his mess when he died. But The one guy who hated him the most was my uncle Pete. Pete made the business models, made the first prototypes and when push came to shove my father took the credit. My uncle never saw the fruits of his labor.” Charlie explained.
“So yer father was the type to sell ya the eye out of your head eh?” Ella smirked.
“I don’t have the slightest idea what you mean.” Charlie responded.
“It means Daddy was a right ol shyster.”
Ella explained.
“In that case yeah. Very much so.”
Charlie confirmed.
“ Well this has been enlightening.” Ella chuckled to herself.
“Thanks for your time.” Aiyana smiled.
Ella was already out in the hallway at this point.
Charlie grabbed Aiyana’s wrist gently as if to get her attention.
“Ana.”
“Yes Charlie?”
“I know your not a secret agent.”
“What, how?”
“Agent Gibbs and McGee... NCIS much? Who came up with that your friend?”
“Yes ,but ...wait if you knew why did you let us question you?” Aiyana questioned.
“Because I like you …. whatever your real name is and I do genuinely want to help.”Charlie grinned looking down to the floor scratching the back of his neck
“Aiyana,my name is Aiyana.”
”Well Aiyana let me treat you to lunch.”
“How do you know you can trust me if I’ve already lied once?” Aiyana wondered.
“Well your not a reporter, you're too obvious and upfront. Not to mention you care about this case and sometimes we all do the wrong things for the right reasons.” Charlie smiled.
“Then let’s do the wrong things.”Aiyana smirked.
“So is that a yes on that date?”
“Yeah, I could never turn down a cute guy and a free lunch. See you tomorrow.” She smiled and walked out after Ella.
Throughout the ride to the motel
all Ella played was smooth romantic Jazz ,Mood music.
Starting with BeeGees, how deep is your love, Boogie wonderland.
“What the hell is up with you?”
“What, nothing.”
“Well this isn't exactly the Irish whiskey drinking music.”
“I just… Felt like something different.”
“You don't wanna talk about it do you?”
“You know me so well.” She turned up the music.
