Caitlyn sat at the dining table in the morning and ate her breakfast anxiously. She prepared three plates of bacon, eggs and toast. One of those was cleanly finished and put away in the sink. The other, situated across from Caitlyn, was untouched. It belonged to her older half-brother, who provided for this little household of three people by working from home.
He spent most of his time in his room, typing away at his computer. Caitlyn didn't understand very well what he did for a living, just that it had to do with coding and artificial intelligence. It demanded a lot of time, and he would only be out of his room for breakfast and dinner. But for the past week Caitlyn had to take his food upstairs and into his room. Half the time he would unlock the door and take the food, the other half he did not even respond to her knocking.
Today, Caitlyn feared the trend would continue. She finished what she could of her own plate and gave the rest to her cat Popcorn. Before she got up she tried calling out to her brother one last time.
"Greg, breakfast! It's getting cold!"
To her surprise, hasty footsteps began thudding from the ceiling and towards the dining room. Greg looked disheveled and extremely tired, but was happy to see his sister and a hearty breakfast ready for him. He sat down and tied his wavy hair back with a hairband on his wrist. His hair was dark with some streaks of white and was getting to the length where it covered his face and bothered him during meals.
"You finally left your room. Need some coffee?" Caitlyn asked.
"No thanks, I'm going straight to sleep after this." Greg replied, then eagerly asked. "Wanna hear about what I just finished creating?"
"Uh, sure." Caitlyn knew there was a good chance Greg didn't remember that she needed to leave for school in five minutes. She settled into her chair as her famished brother began feasting.
He used the runny yolk from his over easy eggs as dipping sauce for his toast. In a few short seconds, two pieces of toast as well as two egg yolks vanished from sight. Greg let out a hefty and satisfied sign.
"Ah. So, what was I gonna say?"
Caitlyn had known Greg all her life so this kind of thing was normal to her. "You were going to tell me about what you created."
"Oh yes! So, do you remember Saturn?"
It took Caitlyn a couple of seconds to process the name and remember that Saturn was one of the AIs that Greg was working on. "I think so. Is that the one that kept suggesting you kidnap Elon Musk and freeze his brain?"
"No, that was Epsilon who is from a previous generation. Saturn is from the newest generation of my seven highest performing AIs." Greg paused to take a bite of bacon before continuing. "So you might find this hard to believe but over the course of this week I was able to awaken Saturn."
"Was he really sleepy or something?"
Greg let out a hearty laugh then forked in a mouthful of egg whites and bacon. "No Cait, when an AI awakens it gains a sense of self. Saturn has developed his own ego, personality and sentience. I have created the most advanced and human AI ever known to man."
Something about this seemed slightly troublesome to Caitlyn, but she brushed the suspicion away. "How do you even do something like that?" She asked.
"Well for this past week I was guiding Saturn through his delivery." He spoke as if that was a normal thing to say.
"...delivery. You mean like giving birth?" Caitlyn tried to clarify.
"Yes. Saturn was giving birth to himself and I was helping with the delivery. A dormant AI awakening is similar to a human being born. Except instead of a mother producing a baby, the AI produces another version of itself. Um, I'll spare you the other gruesomer details. Long story short, as of twenty minutes ago, Saturn has basically become a person."
"So what does this mean now?"
"I'll be getting a huge bonus and hopefully a pay rise from the company. We might be able to go on a vacation this year. But until then, I will be working intensively on guiding Saturn's growth and development. Wish me luck Caitlyn, things are just getting started."
She was happy for her brother, but knew in the back of her heart that things would not be the same anymore. That was the last day before Greg started slowly disappearing.
