Kane~ June 10
When I decided I was going to become the Alpha of my own pack, I had no idea just how much fucking paperwork there would. I loathe paperwork. I hate it with every fiber of my being. If I had known beforehand just how much time, I would spend at a deck, and in meetings, I probably wouldn't have left my father's pack.
Actually, that's a lie. I still would have done it.
On the rare occasions that I get to leave this suffocating space called my office, I get to see all the fruits of my- our labor. Derik helped a lot. I love walking around the town and seeing all of my packmates and all the people who benefited from the what we have created here.
Even though there are several pros to being my own Alpha that doesn't erase the fact that I still hate sitting at a desk and reading and signing paper after paper. I think I might hate it, even more, when it's on the computer.
At least when it's on paper, I just have to read it and decide whether or not to sign off on it, but with emails, nine times out of ten I'm expected to reply.
Like this one email, I've been staring at for the past ten minutes. This one has papers to go with it and not just a few pieces of paper no, it has 23 folders full of paper that I have to look through before replying. Oh, joy.
Each folder has information on Lycan teens who are interested in either enrolling or re-enrolling in Mirfield Highschool. Unlike most pack towns, Mirfield has schools. We have an elementary school, middle school, and a high school.
Since Mirfeild has schools where humans and Lycans may attend, the surrounding packs enroll their kids here. Of course, I can't just let other Lycans into my territory, kids or not, without doing background checks on each and every one of them.
I know this is important work but why the fuck am I doing it now? It's only June! School just ended for God's sake!
I've looked through 3 folders so far, and I'm already bored. Twenty more to go then I can leave for the day! I will be able to go check on Roman myself instead of hearing what Derik has to report.
With a heavy sigh, I grab another folder off the stack and flip it open. I stare at the picture attached to the file for a few seconds before reading what information has been gathered on the Lycan. The boy's name is Drake Tower, he's 16, a middle ranked dominant, good grades, from the Blackburn pack, no history of trouble or complaints. I read a little more before deciding he checks out and add his file to the stack of accepted students.
I read through about 13 more files before opening one that catches my attention. The profile picture is of a boy with pale skin, red hair and stunning misty green eyes. Robin Moore his file read. He was 17, average grades, no complaints, and a member of the Matadora pack. Not my favorite band of lycans but not a bad pack. The thing that caught my attention though was his rank. He was an Omega. Nothing wrong with that, of course, it was just that most packs didn't let their omegas go to school. They were too fragile, too precious, too rare.
Omegas were special. They were essentially humans with Lycan parents. Some of them shifted when subjected to extreme emotion while others never get to experience the change.
Each pack was different in regards to how they handled their Omegas. Some protected them, and some treated them as equals while others treated them like trash and often killed or exiled them. There are no omegas in Mirfield as of right now, but I know that they would never be mistreated here.
I went through the rest of Robin Moore's file before adding it to the stack of accepted students as well. By the time I was finished, I had accepted 19 of the 23 students. I tossed the last file onto the taller pile than stretched my arms above my head. I glanced at the clock on my monitor, 7:56 it read. I quickly typed up a response to Derik's email that included the list of Lycans I had granted safe passage over our borders. Within the week the teens would receive an acceptance letter and their Identification Pass Cards.
Hitting send on the email, I closed everything on my computer before shutting it down and standing up from my desk. I straightened up a few piles of paper on my desk, made it look less messy and cluttered. I hope.
Once I was about 70% sure Derik wouldn't scold me for having a messy workspace, I headed for the door. I made a B line for the elevator. All the while trying my hardest to avoid running into Derik, Darrius, Lora or anyone who might try to give me more work to do. I'm a great Alpha, aren't I?
I managed to make it from the fifth floor where my office was located, down to the first floor. I was almost to the lobby, just one more turn after I got off of the elevator and then I was home free!
The doors of the lift opened, and I rush out into the hall.
"Going somewhere, Alpha Barron?"
I just barely managed to hold a very embarrassing yelp of surprise as I whirled around to see who was trying to give me a heart attack.
A man in a navy blue button-down T and black jeans stood beside the elevator with a smug smile on his face. His brown eyes gleamed with amusement as he tried to keep a straight face.
"Damnit, Theo! Don't scare me like that!"
The man's composure finally broke as a grin split his face, and he chuckled. "So sorry." Theo laughed as he placed a hand on his chest and gave a short mocking bow. "Running away again are we?" He asked.
Theo was one of the many Lycan security guards that worked at the Town Hall. On more than one occasion he has helped me leave by not reporting me to Derik. Theo was a good guy, but he wasn't one to help a friend out for free.
I cast a quick glance around us before replying with a smirk. "Of course. If you keep your muzzle shut there's a bit of pocket money in it for your troubles as always." I said pointing a finger his way.
Theo looks around casually with a smile. "Right, right. If anyone asks I'll be sure to tell them a haven't seen a very suspicious man that looks like our hardworking, honest, loyal, Alpha, Kane Barron." His words dripping with sarcasm. I narrow my eyes at him but turn to leave anyway. Theo quickly speaks up again before I can though. "You know, I've turned a blind eye your escapes for a while now. Derik is starting to suspect me. I don't think a bit of pocket money is going to cut it anymore. Derik offered me a pretty impressive reward if I turned you in next time." I slowly turned back to face the Lycan who dared to try and blackmail me. Theo had his hands behind his back, and his head cocked to the side as he gave me an innocent smile that was nowhere close to reaching his eyes.
"Imagine the thanks I would get from Derik." The sly bastard continued.
"What do you want?" I ground out.
Theo gave me a victorious grin. "A raise and a promotion." He stated.
My face deadpanned at that. "You realize I could just fire you right?"
Theo gasped and played hurt as he placed a hand over his heart. "But then who would assist in helping you get out of work?"
He had a point. Not many of the other people and Lycans were willing to go against Derik and let me leave. Sometimes - most times - it feels like Derik is the Alpha and not me. I don't blame them. Derik is pretty fucking scary when he's made. But it's worth it if I get to see Roman!
"Fine," I bite out at Theo. "You'll get your raise and your promotion. Now if you'll excuse me." I sang as I turned and speed-walked toward the clear glass double doors of the lobby. I rounded the corner, I saw the doors and damn it if I didn't hear yet another person calling my name.
"Ah, Mister Barron! May I have a word?" A woman's voice called.
No you may not!
I would have kept walking and pretended that I didn't hear the lady but the click of heels and glimpse of short black hair made me stop. I turned my head with a groan as I watched a short petite woman in her late 50's hurry over to me.
Mrs. Bowers was a member of the City Council. She didn't think too highly of Lycans.
Why is she staying in a town-owned by them and swarming with them?
That is the million dollar question.
She claims that it is because she has to protect the human race from the beasts, but everyone knows it's for her own gain.
Apparently, it's harder then I thought to fire someone. It's not as easy as saying, "You're fired!" like in the movies. Maybe it is in some places, but It's a little more complicated in her case. Mrs. Bowers already has it out for me simply because of what I am so it's better to do what I can to keep her happy then give her more reasons too hate me.
"Mr. Barron," The aging lady repeats as she crosses to lobby to me. "I was hoping I would catch you. I wanted to discuss a few things with you before the council meeting-"
"Actually, I have somewhere I need to be." I interrupt. I need to get out of here before Derik sees me or someone decides to rat me out.
Mrs. Bowers pauses with her jaw agape as she gives me a look of disbelief. She quickly composes herself though and gives me a smile that is supposed to be sweet, but I can see the irritation in her eyes. "I'm sure you can spare a few minutes. I won't take up too much of your time, I promise."
You ever have those people whose voice alone just gets on your nerves? And then when you actually listen to the words that voice is forming it just makes you want to blow a fuse? Yeah? Well, that pretty much sums up what it's like talking with Mrs. Bowers.
She questions every little thing I do and talks down to me like I'm a child pretending to know what he's doing.
I got to say though, she's got guts to act all high and mighty considering her age and that I'm more than a foot taller than her. Take away her heels, and she barely makes it over five foot.
I let out a heated sigh and ruffle my hair a bit as I glance around us. "I guess I can spare a few minutes."
Mrs. Bowers small smile grew to an annoyingly large grin as she brought her hands together with a clap in front of her. "Excellent! I knew you could." The way she said that just made my teeth grind. "Now then," she neatly folded her hands behind her back. "I wanted to voice my concerns about the incident that took place the other night. About the rogue." She clarifies.
My brows drew together in confusion. How does she know about that already?
"Several people called in with reports about a dangerous looking man running through the residential area on Berk Street," Mrs. Bowers continues. "I'm afraid that it might harm the citizens. After all, rogues are unpredictable and dangerous. But I'm sure you will make the right decision and get rid of it." Her smile never once faltered.
It. She called Owen an it. Like he was just a wild dog. I may not know everything about Owen but to hear anyone talked about like that pisses me off. But the thing that bothers me more is the fact that she knows anything about this and is acting like she has any say in it.
I avert my eyes to the floor until I get my anger under control. Shoving my hands into my pockets, I shift my weight onto my left leg before looking down at Mrs. Bowers with a forced smile. "I'm not sure how you heard about that so fast but let me assure you everything is under control and the Lycan is no threat to anyone." My smile drops as I continue. "But let me also remind you that any and all matters regarding Lycans and rogues are under my jurisdiction and I politely ask that you stay out of it." I barely managed to keep the growl out of my voice.
Before Mrs. Bowers could give any kind of response, I gave her another forced smile and said, "Now, if you will excuse me, I really have to be going," before turning on my heel and walking outside.
