“I usually charge 6000 for establishing contacts and finding the right place for new people and then from thereon 500 for pointers or as I see fit for the situation.” This is indeed a well-paid job, but it’s not like anyone can just choose to be an informant like me. Oh yeah, “pointers” is the word we use for getting the Contrasts ‘jobs’. No, not just jobs like carpenters and such. Jobs where they can use their powers, places where they don’t get caught doing it. I could probably have just gotten a normal job but it's a bit something else for the Contrasts
“But hey, meet me up at this location instead for further discussion of this.”
I say as I write down the location on a napkin and slides it over to the girl.
“Huh? Can’t we just finish it up here?” Man, you haven’t even noticed? The ‘couple’ across the restaurant has been looking awfully much at us. Seems Liz knows what's going on as she stands up and puts on a smile.
“She's right, we can discuss it some other time”
“Eh? You too? Well…. Alright?”
Great job Liz. I wave as they leave.
Well, now let's get on with shaking off these people...
I stand up and take my jacket that I had hung on the chair on. It's a nice warm one, maybe a bit too girly for some, but it’s perfect for me. Did get it from a very talented client once, as compensation for a pointer.
I, of course, give them a big tip as that brownie was amazing before I leave.
I open the door, walk out of it and et cetera - away I go.
I walk down the street as casually as normal, as this isn’t the first time I've tried being followed by others. Last time actually wasn’t that too long ago.
Happens a lot when dealing with Contrasts.
Worth a fortune they say. Hand them over they say. Fuck you I say.
I take a turn down the street towards one of the warehouses I own.
Should be able to deal with them easily enough there.
I begin to hurry a little to make it seem like I’ve first noticed them now.
Should make them pick up the pace and move in on me a bit quicker and eventually confront me as soon as we are there, right as I want them to. Occasionally turning my head to look like I'm being paranoid about being followed.
I take pride in my job. It’s not like I waste away the money I earn from helping the Contrasts. I usually use them to help them even more in some way or another. Though, money enough to live in a nice apartment, in the nice part of the town - by myself, is quite pleasant.
I take another turn down a small alley which have few escape options if you ain't me. Key to the keyhole, open the door and in I go. The room I've entered is much darker than the outside surroundings making it hard to adjust to, for the eyes. I move along the wall towards the light switch I know where is. A flick and it suddenly is even harder to adjust the eyes. Around 5 projectors are apparently placed around me, in my warehouse, pointed at me. As I can't see anything, I try to listen closely to what is going on. Much yelling, but it's of different tongue than the good old English we use here in the country. Perhaps my last client leaked info, perhaps they knew all along.
God, that sounds cheesy even for my standards.....
Confused and surprised, I trip backward into the wall.
Now sitting, I try covering my eyes from the harsh light.
The shouting got closer, which I think is caused by them, of course, moving in to take me.
I reach for the ball in my bag, pull the pin and throw it.
First going after the man with the gun about 5 meters from me, making him unconscious by a well-placed punch to the jaw, then going for the other man armed with a metal pipe. He swings it, but I dodge under as his vision is still burned by the powerful flash. A kick between the legs and he is out like his comrade. I run toward the door and smashes it open - right into one of the pursuers from the beginning. She wavers and takes her hands to her face, her broken nose. The man with her goes for a punch but I’ve already taken the first steps into my sprint away from here.
Seeing the difference in our physiques, he doesn’t even try running after me.
I look back after I’ve run for half an hour. No pursuers.
I let out a sound of relief. I maybe agile but damn, it’s too much having to fight and run and all that, the same day you’ve had PE classes. Good that I met new Contrasts today. I’ll need them in solving this mess. It’s even better they aren’t well-known faces around here, unlike me. I pull up my phone, that is amazingly still not smashed at all, even when thinking of all it has been through.
It’s about time I go home.
I search for my keys in the bag, finding it being stuck to another flashbang.
Lucky me that I didn’t pull that one earlier.
I walk into my apartment and close the door, putting on the 3 different locks I have for feeling a bit safer. I walk in a straight line past my bedroom and the bathroom and into the living area. A little turn and into the open kitchen. Not really anything in the fridge so I guess I’ll be ordering food from outside today.
I head dive onto the sofa.
It’s been a hell of a lot more hectic since what happened, twelve years ago? Fifteen years?... Not really sure, but what happened from what I know is it was world chaos for a couple of years. Then it of course kinda began being less chaotic of course. The governments really did all they could to hold a lid on the boiler. It was some crazy joint experiment between the technically and scientifically superior countries. As the government kept a lid on it, of course, I’d know just a little more than the common person but not it all. Didn’t notice what it mean for me before I was entering the teenage years. I began seeing things, don’t take me for a crazy person, as in seeing things even when my eyes were closed. Why? I don't know. How? You tell me. Kinda makes it easy being an informant seeing what other eyes don’t. It’s not always nice though. It's not always what you don't see that is worth seeing. It's a whole other level of weirdness with the actual contrasts. They have it way rougher with their lives than me. I look out through the huge window that has this nice overlook of the inner city. Bright lights, people buzzing around with their own normal lives, even some thief getting arrested.
I forgot eating dinner that day since I fell asleep right there on the sofa.
