In the middle of New York, two Kaiju fought, and the crowds cheered. One a giant crab scuttles around dodging blasts of fire that a giant dinosaur shoots out. The dinosaur stomps ahead crushing the street underneath its feet as it moves, it swings its tail and slams it down onto the crab. The crab raises its claw and pinches down on the tail as a burst of bubbles shoot out of its mouth.
“Alright, Crabbo’s in top form today.” A boy says watching the battle on his tablet. “But you can never underestimate Wreckosaurous.”
The Crabbo’s bubbles blowback Wreckosaurous as the crab swings smacking the dinosaur into a building. The building crumbles as Wreckosaurous forces itself to stand with fire gathering in its jaws.
“Alright Wrecker, give it one last blast!” A voice yells out on a floating disk.
“Don’t give up Crabby, we need to win this!” Another voice yells from another floating disk.
Wreckosaurous shoots out a large blast of fire as Crabbo shoots out a blast of bubbles. The fire and bubbles mix and a large blast of steam envelop the area as the two Kaiju rush ahead. The steam obscures the last clash and as it fades away the crab stands over the body of the dinosaur.
“That’s it, folks, Crabbo has won the battle!” An announcer yells out as the crowd cheers excitedly.
A flying disk floats down to the dinosaur and a large man leaps off of it to hug the dinosaur. A woman leaps off her disk onto the crab’s head rubbing it happily. She smiles and stands atop the crab’s head raising her arms to the air in triumph.
“In a moment we’ll be interviewing the winners Team Crabby in a moment to see what their plans are after this battle.” The announcer says.
The boy smiles excitedly watching the match as he shakes with anticipation. “This match was great!” He yells out as he pauses the video.
He glances his eyes at the cloak and then leaps up. “Oh, crap I have to get going!”
He rushes through his room grabbing a bag as he runs towards the door opening it as he runs ahead.
A while later the boy sits on a bus messing around with his tablet as he cycles through images of various giant monsters. His grin widens and his excitement raises the more images he moves through the images.
“Kenji, you paying attention?” A voice asks.
Kenji moves his gaze and looks up. A young girl with long blond hair looks down on him with a scowl. “If you keep this up, you’ll be late again.”
“Dian? Well, I must be on time since you’re on the same bus.” He says moving his attention back to the tablet. “Now if you’ll excuse me I have some studying to do.”
Dian’s scowl worsens, and she snatches the tablet away from Kenji. “You’ll forget where you are and get off at the wrong stop.”
“What?”
“That’s how you’ll be late, again!” She yells out.
“Have a little faith in me.” He says grabbing his tablet back. “Besides, this is important for now I need to study.”
She rolls her eyes. “Fine, but if you're late again, we’ll start practice without you.”
“Oh, shut up, there’s no way I’ll be late now.”
Time passes and Kenji sits on the bus staring at his tablet unable to look away. The bus moves and after some time he looks up from his tablet and notices Dian outside of the bus.
“Dian! Hey, wait, Dian!” He leaps up from his seat only for the bus to move. “Hey wait, this isn’t right?”
The bus moves away as Dian walks away from the spot. “Just like I said. You never learn you, idiot.”
A while later Kenji runs up the gates of a building as they slowly close with a large man standing in front. He leaps up into the air over the gate landing on the other side flat on the ground as he laughs.
“I’m not late today!” He yells out.
The large man walks towards him. “Well, you’re on the premises, but you're still late for your actual class.”
“What?”
“First Period, it just started.” He says.
Kenji lowers his head. “So that means?”
“See me in detention at the end of the day.” He says handing him a slip of paper.
“Yes, sir,” Kenji says dejectedly. “I was so close today. If I hadn’t gotten distracted, I would’ve made it.”
He smiles at him. “While your fervor for studying is impressive. You still have to pay attention to your actual classes.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Now on to class for now.”
Kenji stands up and walks away moving towards the building. “How long will detention be today?”
“The same as always, two hours.”
“Of course,” Kenji says.
“Alright, class let’s go over Kaiju history for tomorrow’s exam.” The teacher says addressing the class.
With the classroom full of students, they all look around unconcerned as the teacher stands before them. As the class sits around Kenji opens the door and walks in with his head lowered.
“Ah, Mr. Yamane, it’s good for you to join us today.” The teacher says coldly.
“Yes maim, I’m sorry for being late,” Kenji says.
She turns away from him and moves to away from the board. “Just take your seat class is starting.”
Kenji rushes to the back of the room into an open seat as he sits quickly.
“I knew it,” Dian says sitting next to him. “I told you if you're too absorbed into your Kaiju research you’ll only make yourself late.”
Kenji glares at her. “You could’ve warned?”
She smirks. “Now what good would that do if you didn’t learn from your actions.” She puts a book up to cover her face. “Of course, you never seem to learn from your lessons.”
Kenji pouts and stares at the board as it glows brightly.
“Since the dawn of man, Humans have lived alongside Kaiju.” She says with an image of a man and a giant reptile appearing on screen. “At first Man was terrified of the beasts, but overtime Humanity learned to tame them.”
“Hey…” Kenji whispers to Dain. “So, do you think you could wait for me after school?”
“Nope.” She whispers back. “If you had listened to me, you wouldn’t be in detention.”
Kenji glares. “But you can’t really start without me.”
“Well, I’ll just substitute for you for a bit. As a Minder, it’s pretty easy even without your Bond.”
Kenji’s glare worsens. “Oh, come on!”
“Mr. Yamane!” The teacher yells out. “If you would come back to class, please tell us the remaining history.”
“Oh umm….” Kenji struggles trying to find the words.
Dian tilts her book for him to see pointing to an image of a giant monster in armor on the page. “Don’t ask for anything else.” She mouths.
“Humans used the Kaiju in various wars, but none so bad as the Second Great Kaiju War,” Kenji says. “Almost eighty percent of the Kaiju population was used in the battles and seventy percent were lost to the violence.”
She sighs. “Good Mr. Yamane. I guess we can count on you for information on Kaiju.”
“Now, since then the Kaiju population has slowly increased but not back to what it once was. Several Kaiju species went extinct and now conservation efforts are high for protecting the monsters.” She closes her books and smiles. “However, Kaiju naturally have an instinct to fight, so in order to deal with that, the Kaiju Brawl Battles or the KBB were invented. A structured battle between two of these massive beasts that I’m sure all of you are quite familiar with.”
“Yeah!” Kenji yells out.
“Mr. Yamane calm down.” She says. “We’re not done with history just yet.”
“Yes maim,” Kenji says nervously.
The day goes on and Kenji continues his day going through various classes until finally, the last school bell rings. As the bell’s sound echoes out students from across the campus make way for the school gate as it slowly opens. Dian walks among the crowd taking a glance back at the building.
“He got himself in this mess on his own. You can’t keep trying to help him if he never learns or listens.” She whispers to herself as she turns away and walks off.
As the others leave Kenji sits at a desk in a classroom staring out the window, holding back his desire to rush off.
“I know this sucks for you kid.” An older man says sitting at a teacher’s desk playing around on his phone. “Last day before vacation and you spend another hour in the classroom, must really suck.”
Kenji pouts. “It really does, and all I did was study up for our upcoming trails.”
“Trails you say?” HE asks. “Some sort of athletic sport or something?”
Kenji picks himself up. “It’s Kaiju Brawling!”
“What?”
“I’m an almost official Kaiju Brawler, after winning my qualifier trails I’ll be a hundred percent official,” Kenji says excitedly.
The man turns away disinterested. “You and everyone else kid. Everyone wants to be a Kaiju Brawler, but there are only so many Kaiju left in the world.”
“I know that but….”
“So only a handful of people can become Kaiju Brawlers every year. So, unless you have one already then there’s no chance of you getting one.”
Kenji rushes ahead and slams his hands on the table with a wide grin on his face. “Oh, trust me, I have a Kaiju, and I plan to become the Kaiju King!”
“Oh, really now kid, I hope you’ve got the strength to prove it.” The teacher says with a wide grin on his face.
Kenji deflates and moves back to his desk sitting down and staring out at the window in frustration. As the hour end, Kenji rushes out of the room moving towards the entrance at top speed rushing through the gate.
“That kids got a lot of energy in him. I hope he can find some way to direct that craziness.” The teacher says putting his phone away.
Kenji rushes ahead moving at top speed as he rushes down the street stopping at stoplights and jogging to keep pace. As the light turns green, he runs to the bus stop as the bus pulls up and opens its doors. Swiping his card as he rushes inside he pulls out his phone as he takes a seat.
“Hey Dian, did you start?” he asks concerned.
“Of course, now get over here already!” Dian’s voice yells over the phone. “And we’re not working overtime to make up from the lost time, got it!”
“Fine.” He says annoyed.
The bus pulls up and moves to the edge of town. Kenji leaps off the bus and walks down the dirt road leading to a warehouse. He moves trembling with excitement as he grabs the doors. He opens the doors with a wide grin on his face excitedly.
“I’m home!” He yells out across the warehouse.
A piece of paper flies across the room hitting him in the head as he enters. “You're late,” Dian says throwing another paper ball.
“Shut up! It’s not my fault I was held back.”
She walks up towards him. “Weren’t you the one who ignored me, and the one who to distracted to get off the bus on time.”
“Alright, I admit it it’s my fault.” He says relenting. “Now can we get this practice session going?”
“Fine. He just started moving. He should really be getting more exercise.”
Kenji smiles. “Oh, don’t worry, we’ll be getting plenty of it. Right Repigigas!?”
A large black lizard-like creature with blue streaks going down its back raised up. Its large slender body, and it moves to the warehouse’s doors.
“As dumb as it is, the big guy likes you,” Dian says. “So, let’s get moving and get practice going.”
“Alright let’s set up the targets and practice our shots,” Kenji says.
The giant lizard smirks and moves out of the opened doors. It lets out a large cry and Kenji smiles as he moves towards the door excitedly.
