The Surface

The Bringer of Death

The Bringer of Death

Nov 01, 2018

I died yesterday.

No really- I did.

My outcries became silent shrieks of desperate gasps for air as I laid there in an ineffable denial.

I was lifeless…

And it was all for him.

I suppose it can’t be helped.

There is just something about him.

Something…of an inextricable intrinsic beauty.

This isn’t 'love'.

No…

This is something else.

Something far more…

dangerous.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

“Rick!” I pleaded.

“Please… don’t do this!” My fiery rancor that attacked in rage just moments ago became throbbing wistful tears.

“Don’t leave him.” The virulent toxins manifested as lumped coagulations, spotting his once pale flawless skin.

"He’ll die! “I’m begging you-" I pleaded.

"- just give him the shot! I’ll do anything; I swear!”

His gasps for air slowed with each passing second. Rick’s obsequious mules formed an impenetrable buttress around me. There was no escaping…

I’m gonna kill them

I’m gonna kill them all if they let him die!

“What’s this?” He followed up his blows to my stomach with a condescending speech.

“Found yourself a little treat, did ya?” tossing me back to the ground. My face buried within the dirt as my hands were bounded behind me.

Shoving his head up against the cave walls, he extended his means of harassment and brutality. “What makes you so special?” He jeered at him.

His jealousy had clearly driven him mad. His scornful envy bled and seeped through his cracked demeanor. He removed his gun from the shaft and pointed it.

Then I saw it.

Her visions were right- One of us will die here

…and then, he pulled the trigger.

In this world which I have grown to hate

I only see death and decay

Life is an unending game fill with mess ups and mistakes

It bears the name of deception

It conceals the truth of reality

Lies made to trap the innocent

Graves hold the stories of the untold

Thus afraid I am to love for all are walking tombs

None will be spared the sorrow the agony of a fallen love

All I can say is rest in peace

All I can do is weep

As the sands of this life grow cold

The inevitable death

Will soon take hold

This all started about a month ago…

Sora looked up at us with great confusion as she paced back and forth the room. “What the hell is going on?” She yelled.

The professor stormed towards her, cutting her off and grabbing her by the wrist, “Listen to me- If you don’t get a hold of yourself, we are all going to die!”

Her face oozed terror. With spiked vitals and flooded sweat glands, she impetuously glanced at me every ten seconds.

“Zod what’s the plan?” Even with my abilities, I knew that the situation was grim. “How are we getting out of here?”

“The door won’t hold much longer!” The professor panicked.

“Everyone, listen up!” Zod walked over to us with a briefcase and a knapsack that he pulled from between a hidden safe in the wall. He opened it then pointed to some vials. “These are the earliest samples of Contaminate treatment. You will need them to keep Sora alive.”

–Sora? – I puzzled.

I slowly backed away as I realized what he was about to do. Wide-eyed, I stared at him and muttered,

“Zod...”

“What would you have me do?” He snapped at me, muttering his ultimatum, "Only two people could possibly get out of here alive... would you have me leave Sora in this room?"

Inside the briefcase were maps, explosives, and rations. “Each vial contains enough for five days sustenance,” he continued speaking to us three, “this means that you have to find the spring and be back before 40 days. Otherwise, Sora will die.”

A staggering Sora baffled to voice words.

“H…Ho..Hold”

Her hands vibrated the table she braced on. “Hold on just a minute. Where am I going?”

BANG! BANG!

“Sora, there is no time to explain!” The professor embraced her.

“Dad, what’s going to happen to you?” She cried. “Don’t worry about me,” he said. “I’ll be fine. Just stay with Ryun and he’ll keep you safe.”

“Ryun, give me your hand.” Zod reached out and unfolded my fist then laid a tiny glass bottle inside my palm.

I slightly loosened my fingers to peak “What’s this?” I asked.

“It’s a vial of HGz2.”

BANG! BANG!

And then, suddenly…in the heat of the moment, there was silence.

Dead silence.

Silence so painfully loud as to bleed the drums of one’s ear.

It rang in my head and left me dimwitted

And then, he said it. “You know what to do if you must.”

“I can’t…” I shuddered.

“Save the monsters or Kill Humanity. The choice is yours.” Closing my fist around it, he painfully smiled in remorse. “I am so proud of you.”

I grabbed him, reaching all the way to his back and locked him in an embrace, “Zod,” I begged, “I can’t lose you.”

He released my hold then smiled.

Placing the briefcase in my right hand and the knapsack was thrown over my shoulder he said, “Those who cannot learn from History are doomed to repeat it!”

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The knocking had finally reached a halt. “This is your last chance!”

“Go!” Zod shouted.

I could hear the bomb ticking.

Placing a chair beneath the vents, the Doctor hurried us.

“Go to the control room in section A. Use the immobilizer to disengage the heat sensors and trackers in the vents. Go to A, then use exit 4 to find Aircraft D1O2Z3. Here are the keys. Set it to autopilot to the last destination. That’s where she was taken so it’s your best bet!” I hopped in the vent and then reached for Sora.

“Come on!" I shouted, "We have to go, now!”

“Go? Go where?" She cried out to Zod.

“Sora”, he grabbed and hoisted her up, “you’re going… to the surface”

BOOM!
