What a jerk! But yes, this happens way too much.
The funny thing is, names do not actually have gender. If you follow along the history of names, names like Connor and Cole were commonly used specifically for females up until a certain point in time. Ariel was actually a commonly used male name up until Disney’s A Little Mermaid came out. So really all names are unisex and don’t belong to a specific gender. It’s people who get all uptight and try associate names with specific genders. You should be able to call yourself whatever you want. It’s irrelevant what other people think. What matters is that you like the name and you feel it suits you.
I also get yelled at a lot because my male cat is named Willow. Most people are like “That’s a girls name” and I just respond with “Nah, man. It’s not.” And seriously has anyone read the book or watched the movie Willow? Willow, the main character, is a male in that.
I also get overly excited when I see people breaking down human created name barriers.
That ended up being longer than I thought so a brief summary would be:
names have no actual gender, you deserve to be called whatever you want to be called and have the proper pronouns you want to be referred by used, and some people can be really stupid and it’s just best to ignore them especially if politely correcting them doesn’t work.
Take care of yourself too.
