Not a German speaker but I asked a few friends about this and it seems to check through.
I've also been told that if the story is reaaaaly old, one takes out the beard winding machine (Bartwickelmaschine) out of the cellar.
Sometimes when you've heard a story a thousand times, you can make a winding motion and make a cracking noise as though you are taking out the metaphorical machine out the cellar.
What do you think, guys? It's a pretty interesting phrase right?
Also, if there are any German speakers willing to help find out where this phrase comes from, that would be wonderful! I'd love to know how this came to be c:
