The first few weeks of school passed by in a blur, and soon enough we were being bombarded with posters for the Homecoming dance. Even though it was still over a week away, my friends and I were in a panic in the cafeteria. What were we going to wear? Who do we want to go with?
Kathy sat silently thought our entire conversation. When Isa had asked her who she wanted to go with, her eyes darkened sadly and she replied with a quiet, “No one,” before getting up and leaving our table.
Mt friends and I watched her leave. She seemed to be very upset, but we really had no idea why.
Josh then decided to stop by and sit in Kathy’s vacated seat. “Hey guys, do you know where Kathy went?” He asked.
“No idea,” I told him, “why?”
Grinning, Josh said, “I wanted to take her to the dance. I was coming over to ask when she disappeared.”
My friends and I looked at each other uneasily. This was going to end very badly for Josh, which was too bad since he was one of the more likeable ones of my brother’s friends.
In the end, it was Whitney who turned to Josh and said, “I don’t think that’s the best idea.”
He looked startled, “Why not?”
“Because I don’t think she wants to go to the dance,” I said gently.
Josh snorted, “Well she’ll go with me. I am a senior after all. Any sophomore would love to go with a senior.” And then he left.
I shook my head, amazed at his arrogance, and spoke my thoughts, “He is done for.”
My friends nodded in their agreement with me as we finished with our lunch.
I managed to catch up with Kathy outside of her French class. “Hey,” I said grabbing onto her arm, “What happened at lunch? You just disappeared.”
Kathy glanced into the class and replied, “Je dois partir. I have to go. I’ll talk to you about it later. Au revoir.” Then she forcefully broke my grip and left me standing in the hallway. Something must be wrong for her to act this way… I mean, that kind of hurt.
