Kathy
The next day dawned grey and gloomy. A heavy fog lay over the world, preventing me from going for a morning run. My day, which began on a bad note since I wasn’t able to go for a run, became so much worse when Josh arrived to walk with us to school. I really was having a harder and harder time being nice to the guy.
I stayed silent during our walk, barely listening as the others talked about the dance that I was determined to skip no matter what the cost. Finally, the moment I had been dreading, Josh decided to drop back so he could talk to me.
“So,” He said casually, “Jake talked to you yesterday?”
“Yes,” I replied simply, thinking maybe he would get the hint that I didn’t want to talk to him.
“I’m sorry asked him,” Josh said, sounding sincere, “I knew you wouldn’t feel comfortable saying yes to someone other than myself.”
I stopped dead. “What?” I demanded, dropping my pretense of trying to be nice.
“Well sure,” he said with a shrug, “you’re uncomfortable talking to Jake about me, I totally understand.”
“You know nothing,” I hissed at him them turned to leave.
He grabbed onto my arm, “Come on Kathy, I just want to take you to the dance, show you a good time. You know you want to go.”
I jerked my arm from him, “Yeah, maybe with my boyfriend, but certainly not with you.”
He gave me a look as if I was sad and pathetic, “Your boyfriend is back at home, and he doesn’t even have to know.”
My lips went white with fury, “I don’t have to listen to you.”
“Well if you’re going to feel bad about it, why don’t you just talk to him? I’m sure he will understand,” Josh flashed me his brilliant, confident smile as he continued to walk towards the school.
I stood rooted on the spot, fury coursed through me so much that I just had to hit something or else I knew that I would be in for trouble later. So, without any other thought, I took off and ran towards the workout room, where I spent the entire day. I had been pacing myself all day, so that when Mr. Stone showed up when school was over, I had already decided to be done for the day.
“You’re here early,” Mr. Stone said to me.
“I’ve actually been here all day,” I replied, wiping sweat from my face.
He looked at me in surprise, “Well then I guess there isn’t much more for us to do here then is there?” Once I shook my head he added, “Then all I need to do is remind you that your first trip to Carmine City University is on Saturday.”
My eyes widened with shock, and then a grin broke out on my face as excitement coursed through me. This is what I had been waiting for! Carmine City, it was time for me to get back on the ice. A reminder as to what I had been training for. How on earth could I have forgotten about the trip? Of course, then I realized that if I had to go to CCU this weekend, I would have no choice but to miss the dance.
Suddenly, everything seemed a whole lot brighter.
